Steering adjustment

Unread post by MUTT Vet » January 28th, 2009, 2:52 pm

Does anybody know what the typical turn radius for the A2 should be?

When i changed out the upper and lower ball joints, i noticed a decrease in trun radius.

Is there a way to adjust the steering to get a tighter turn radius?

I looked in the TM but didn't see anything about adjusting turn radius.

Thanks!
Eric

the turn radius should be 18.5 feet. its possible you may have gotten a tighter radius due to slop in the worn out ball joints. I don't know of any way to adjust the radius tighter, maybe someone with more mechanical knowledge than me might know though.

Eric,
the steering stop bolts can be adjusted to alter the turning radius. The procedure can be found in TM9-2320-218-34-1 (Aug-82 w/change-1 Jun-83) page 9-25.

However... the radius should be 18.5 ft. If you adjust the steering stops to decrease the turn radius, there is a SEVERE DANGER of tire hangup on the inner front fender, with the danger multiplied on rough surfaces.

18.5ft is what it should be......18.5 ft is what you should go for.
Kind regards....
Ken

Great! Thanks guys.

Now what's the best way to measure that 18.5 ft radius?

Find a large flat dirt surface and cut the wheel all the way, then drive in a circle and measure the tire marks?

Thanks again.

9 1/4 ft rope, rebar stake on one end, rebar stick on the other. stretch rope taut after setting stake, scribe circle.

inside wheel should ride on scribed line
