Fuel tank drain plug needed

Unread post by Challenger2 » July 21st, 2020, 11:43 am

Hi guys,
My '77 A2 restoration continues. Checking the underside in preparation for a media blast of the whole body I found fuel was weeping from the fuel tank drain plug area.
Removing the tank from the body meant a fuel and a vapour line having to be cut because of seized fittings. (Side Query: Has anyone re-flared a shortened line and reconnected it despite now missing the length of the lost nut?)
A fuel tank specialist has repaired the rusting around the drain plug flange and another small rust hole and reckons the general condition of the tank is good but on the bench I found the drain plug (Plug Pipe Duel Tank Drain p/no 444577) was well and truly seized. It has now been removed and in the process was well and truly destroyed.
I have searched all my usual sources but cannot locate this item. Does anyone have one(or two) they can sell please OR can it be replaced with a suitable bolt (perhaps a brass hex screw?) and a gasket?
Thanks, and stay safe all,
Challenger2

Just to clarify, are you talking about the bung?...or the plug itself?

If it's just the plug, that should be a standard, off-the-shelf, hardware store item here in the states.

Hi M3A1,
Thanks for responding, yes it is just the plug. The original plug (or at least the one which came out) is a steel machined part with a threaded section (3/8" UNF?) and a square nut (now well rounded and with a good portion of the thread destroyed NOT by myself). I aim to keep things original where I can, and recover and restore as much as I can.
But this is ONLY a plug to keep the fuel in and be removed to drain when necessary? Would any similar piece be okay?

That should be standard pipe thread. I don't know if metric is different or not. Probably.
Here is a link to Mcmaster Carr but if you have to buy one little item and have it shipped it will not be worth it. If you go with brass use teflon tape and do not tighten it too tight and definitely do NOT use stainless steel since the threads will gall and you will never get it out. I am surprised you got that on out.

This is the only plug I have ever seen in the gas tank unless Bubba has changed it. looks like 3/8 NPT with a square head. :)

It looks to be the same plug that's used in the Intake

Thanks Rick,
NPT plugs are available here in the UK. I will probably go the brass route and as you suggest use Teflon tape and don't over tighten. I will also probably go Allen key fitting.

I say don't go too tight because if it leaks a little you can always tighten it a little at a time until it stops and then you are there. That way you did not crank it way to tight just to make sure and have trouble getting it out the next time. Another thing you could use instead of the tape is Permatex #3 sealant. It never gets hard so the same thing applies. I use that on all of my thin gaskets and also on my coolant hoses. It prevents the corrosion of the aluminum housings on the pump and thermostat housings a bit and it also prevents the hoses from welding themselves to the housings. Easy to get on and easier to get off.

George, It IS a tapered pipe thread BUT, in looking at that designation I see it says it is an ANPT plug which is Aeronautical national pipe taper.
You can use a NPT plug with sealer and it will be fine, the military always wants things made to the finest detail for some reason. I can see it for aeronautical use but not in a dirty vehicle!

Hello George and Rick.....

Part Number MS20913-2S does not relate to NIIN 4730-00-221-2136.

What it DOES relate to is NIIN 4730-00-221-2137

And using Part Target, here's the result showing a correct cross-reference
see https://www.parttarget.com/4730-00-221- ... 0-221-2137

Kind regards....
