mixture screw

Unread post by Mark » July 11th, 2020, 6:55 pm

Someone vandelized the A2 by turning the mixture in so hard I really had a hard time screwing it out, I got it running, but not good.I would think the carburetor is junk now as the hole is too big/the screw is distorted.Any feedback?

PS I went back to jeep, the screw is in so tight I can't get it screwed out, guess I'll try a channel locks, but that would screw up the screw head

You say they jammed it all the way in but you got it out enough to get it to run, but now you are saying it is jammed in and you need vice grips? If you need to use vice grips it will just break off. Something is wrong here. I am assuming this is an external adjustment screw?

Ok the idle mixture screwed in so hard I had to use a vice grips to unscrew it out so it will run, it runs rough/fast with it not screwed out very much,The acceleration is good, black smoke out the exhaust. So when it got screwed in so far that would make the idle screw hole bigger so the screw does not limit the gas going in the circuit? So to fix it would mean replacing the bottom section of the carburetor? This is a holley carburetor.
This is just part of the vandalism the neighbor did.Oh for the old days!!

Mark- didn't you also have the axe and shovel stolen off of your truck? Man, I'm thankful for where I live and the neighbors we have. I'd have a real hard time tolerating that!

Some really strange ways to vandalize a vehicle. I can think of more damaging things to do quicker and easier. You have GOT to get some cameras and then simply prosecute the bastard. If it is on video there is no way he, nor the court, can deny it happened. He will have to pay for everything he does. The problem you face right now is that it is your word against his.I have a few Holley throttle body sections, i will have to go through them and see what is what. You really need to just put a Zenith on there and be done with it. AND GET A SECURITY SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Several thoughts..

First thought -

Scrap that Holley carb and get a decent Zenith and never look back.

I'm kinda lucky where I live, dead end road, so thieving isn't too bad, plus if you're in my yard stealing something I worked hard to acquire, you will see a gun, thank god I'm not in St Louis where they come take them away.

I heard that JEEP has locking hood hold downs, I'll have to check that out, may slow down a thief.

Take it from a locksmith, locks are for honest people. Locking hood latches on a Jeep? Put a long pry bar behind the latch and POP, broken latch and bent hood. And hood is now open. Better to just let them open the normal latches on video and fry them in court. I assume you are in an area where you are not allowed to protect your property? I thought Montana was a free state.

About holley carb problem, guy on facebook said"they knocked out your jets...just needs rebuilt.Figure out a way to hide the set screws from tampering and I will be fine"
All I know about idle mixture screw is it controls the air/gas going thru the hole in the barrel of the carburetor at idle.I don't know what jets he is talking about.

And neither does he. All these people saying to just have someone rebuild it also, ask them to get you a COMPLETE kit with needle and seat and checkball and float, then I will do it for you. And as far as the "Knocked out jets" Yea, they are knocked out, since there are none. The calibrated holes are enlarged. I have to check, the Holley may have that circuit in a steel base section so it may have wiped out the needle more than the hole. It is going to be a couple days before I can get to my stash of Holley parts.
