Grease in diffs?

Unread post by MUTT Vet » January 8th, 2009, 1:06 pm

I met an old retiree in Oklahoma yesterday at Fort Sill. He saw me driving my Mutt and actually flagged me down so he could look at it.

He told me that he used to work on them and we chatted for a long time about Mutts.

When I showed him all the modifications he was rather impressed that the jeep still looked mostly authentic.

I showed him my manually locking front and rear diffs and he told me that in the service they used to swap out the diff fluid with grease because fluid would leak out off a worn diff easier than grease.

He said that fluid dissipates heat better than grease so it was only for off road or slower speeds, to fast and the heat would build up too much.

My question is, is this feasible or was he just talking about a quick fix? And what kind of speed is too fast?

I haven't done this so don't beat me up!

Grease can be used in some gearboxes. While you can't use a number 2 or 1 grease you could use thinner grades. Standard automotive grease is a number 2 and number 1 is slightly thinner and is sometimes used in automotive applications in extended cold temperatures, especially when the grease is kept outside. A "0" grease is flowable at high temperatures, but a "00" and especially a "000" grease is pourable, especially when it is above 40 or 50 degrees F. We sell buckets of "00" (pronounced 'double ought') grease to a quarry that runs it in gear boxes on crushers, conveyors, etc, that leak real bad.

I personaly, use grease mixed with SAE 90-140 oil in the steering gear, and i have very good results with out any leaking on,
now i'm thinking to add grease also to differential's.

Re: Grease in diffs? how about some STP

Unread post by tokarev » January 9th, 2009, 9:58 pm

One of the other MUTT owners in my area put STP oil treatment in his diffs along with the gear lube - says it helps quiet them down. Aside from adding stuff to the diff a piece of old conveyer belt or large rubber mat does wonders. The sheet metal acts as a big speaker. I happen to have a cut up colapsible military fuel bladder - so it stays military.

I would think that changing the 90W out with grease would work, but as the old guy said it doesn't like heat and I would think that the heat in the diff at road speed (above 35 mph) would cause it to brake down and loose it's properties. This fix to me sounds like an old motorpool trick....oh crap we have an IG inspection quick fix that leak in that diff on that mutt..... so the grease was thrown in to stop the leak and get past the inspection etc...
There is one nut on a M151 that is very difficult to remove.....

Wanted to know how much of lubrication goes in the diff ? Does one need to wait for a noise or should it be checked randomly for lubrication :?:

Hey Sam,

No need to wait for a noise, they all already have noise, but check it often and keep it full. Over full if possible, and for your type of driving, check it after those beach runs to make sure your not contaminating the lube with sea water. That would be often from the looks of your great pictures. I'm like Fil and would be cautious around the water with mine, but would like to see yours in action with a video clip. Ever use youtube? Just a thought. Keep those diffs full and water free!

To keep your diffs water free you can always try that method I talked about in another post.

I ran a hose from my diff vents to the air intake and have not had issues with water intrusion into the diffs since.

You still have to have good seals though or you can still get water in the diffs.

Hello Rainman,
Yes I do use YouTube and have been wanting to put a camera mount on for sometime to have videos. Havent been able to come up with a suitable place / rig to put it on. I dont want it to be a permanent feature so something has to be stable enough on a temp basis with minimal shake.

As for water, in general that is out of the question, but just a little dipping is ok, no fording though. Thats out.
