Correct cap for a non omissions gas tank

Unread post by Rossco » October 21st, 2019, 5:42 am

Hi guys

This question has probably been asked before now? What is the correct gas cap for a non emissions fuel system?

I have fitted a new non emissions gas tank into my pre emissions A2 with the 3 large emissions vents in the tank sealed off with solid blanking plates, one of which has been adapted, with an appropriate fitting to be the return from the top of the carb fuel inlet to minimise vapour lock. The standard fuel tank vent is connected to the air cleaner in the prescribed manner.
So do I need to run a vented fuel cap on the tank or can I use a non vented cap? I have just noticed the new freshly painted cap I have is a non vented version but will buy the correct cap if necessary if this is not going to work with my non emissions set up!

You should be running a vented cap. The non vented cap was for the emissions tank when it was functional since that was a closed system.

Rossco... if your current gascap looks like this (below).......

then change it for this type (below):-

You can of course use this type but make sure you have plenty of replacement trousers and band-aids....:-

Hi George...yes, correct. There is also another vented-type cap which was fitted to Ford A2 vehicles. The problem with this cap is.... it is difficult to unfasten when wearing gloves..... that's why the Mil changed over to the caps with the "ears" on the side (vented and non-vented types as shown above).

Milled-edge Ford A2 cap (vented).........

That is the cap I have on mine and it can be a pain to get on and off. Especially with the newer gasket that stands up to the ethanol gas.

Rick.... it's a rare-ish item and any Ford A2 owner who is obsessive (and who isn't??) should have one of these caps even though they aren't as practical as the caps with the side-ears.
