Most of the guys that drive on a regular basis use 215-85R/16 All Terrains, Tubeless will work just fine as long as the rims are new or in good condition. If they are used I always recommend painting over the inside and rivet heads with a good quality paint. This will guarantee there are no air leaks.

Just regular A/T type tires. BFGs, Generals, etc. Not SUV a/ts but truck/4x4 A/T type.
Some people are too busy knowing it all to ever learn anything

I am pretty sure any tire in the 215/85 size is going to suit your needs since they are pretty much all truck tires. That is the size used on dually pick-ups for 20 years or so through the 80's -90's. There is no need for a tire as heavy as you are talking about and to the contrary those tires will have no give to the sidewalls and stand more chance of damage in rocks.

Ok..

I hit some sharp 1"plus basalt chips on Gifford Pichot FS back roads.. and
had some adventure getting to Yakama,Wash and a new set of tires..

Bend,Oregon uses red volcanic pumice.. no sweat... as well as 3/4 minus.

Dodge 2500 diesel.. that is heavy. I admit they were road weary, but the
gravel did a number. Forest roads that have traffic seem no sweat, but the
offshoots or logging roads are troublesome.

With our pre A2 Mutts, having civilian tires seems odd to me. Why, because the wheels are bowed in at an angle. So these tires will not seem to ride correctly. Am I wrong ?

VW's have done it from the 40's all the way to 1967 when they went to to the four joint axle. As far as running radials on the older A1's I have not done it yet on mine but I plan to this upcoming summer. I haven't heard any complaints from anyone who has gone that route. I suppose they may wear a little faster but you can also buy 215/85R-16 tires a lot cheaper than the NDCC tires available out there.
