shorted out module

Unread post by Mark » August 24th, 2019, 10:20 pm

The A2 quit on me, with a little backfiring so I thought the coil was bad, but in the process of R&R the coil I seen where the red wire from module had a bare wire spot at the mid point shoulder on the distributor. So now I wonder if this shorted out the coil/module?So I guess I'll put everything back together, then try starting it.If no start then start R&R items. But if one item is bad will it cause the other one to go bad? I wouldn't think so as each one would be terminal.I would post pics but postimage is screwed up

hi

yes it is posseble

if the coil has a short at the low voltage side (primary )there is a change the amps over de module go to high for it

normaly it has about 3 amps (the coil from a mutt is also for points so not a high performance coil )

Ok, ohmed out the coil, got 6 ohms, 15K, so this would mean the coil is good?

Mark coil sounds good.
Try correcting fauld.
If it works great!
If you need a new module contact me.

Fil Bonica

Ps that assembly inside distributor is very cramped and things must be done carefully.

Likely there's going to be a problem in the guts of the thing BUT, I don't see evidence of high heat on the potting material. My inclination (since I am a notorious cheapskate) would be to carefully expose that wire to ensure it's not burned through and recoat it (remember that conversation we had recently, Rick?) and see if it will run. Wouldn't be a bad thing to have a spare module laying around, now would it?

Cheers,
TJ

Thanks rickf for posting the pic, thanks to the others for their feedback, to cover the bare wire spots I used self-fusing silicone tape. The liquid insulation was a big blog on the wire, no uniform liquid covering.
