Parking Brake adjustment

Unread post by Bucolic » July 1st, 2019, 12:38 pm

Other than the parking brake handle, can the parking brake be adjusted? Is the procedure addressed in one of the TMs? Is it difficult to replace?

Yes, Bucolic.....as well as the parking brake lever knob, the handbrake band itself is adjustable. The instructions can be found in TM9-2320-218-20-1-2, Chapter-8, Section-1, Pages 8-1 tp 8-13. Wear a dust mask......the brake band could contain asbestos.

The procedure has to be followed to the letter since it involves getting the band spaced evenly around the drum. If that is not done it can drag in spots and create a lot of heat and burn out the transmission seal.

Rick and Ken, thank you both. I'm just about to the end of adjustability using the handle so my guess is for the work involved, I should just get a new band and install it. I'll get the TM Ken mentioned and find the parts I will need and give it a go.

Ken, I got your email and it's attachment. As soon as I have the new brake band (and some free time) I will put it to use.
Thank you.

Well, thanks to you all, as this thread provided a reminder that I needed to check and adjust my hand brake. After more transitions from the drivers seat (working through the removed transmission cover opening) to under the truck than I care to recall, I was able to make the adjustments resulting in a very smooth-working hand brake.

I also took the opportunity to remove the handbrake assembly, remove the accumulated road dirt and rust, lightly lube the adjuster threads and apply a fresh coat of paint. To reduce the dreaded hand-brake rattling, I added thin rubber washers to take up the slack between the pins and adjusting arms. So far, works like a charm.
