A2 Horn button

Unread post by Cav Trooper » March 23rd, 2019, 9:27 am

Anyone know who has a correct horn button for an A2 steering wheel. Hoping not to have to spend $40 $50 on it. Bought one off ebay from a military surplus supply in CA that was supposed to fit according to them. The button was too large to fit in the center hole on the wheel. I tried it on 2 NOS wheels. the wire was also very heavy gauge and would have been a silicone grease tight fit. I sent it back. Now looking again. I have a new one installed but it doesn't sit into the wheel deep enough for the snap ring and I can't get it out. It is just loose enough to move and spin but can't catch the edge to pop it out and I don't want to break the plastic around the hole on a NOS wheel. The wire is tight down the shaft also and can't budge it. I have resigned to destroying it to remove it but need a new one to replace first. The snap ring doesn't bother me but the horn button does not work properly, very intermittent. It does have the brass clip in the column hole for contact and should work. I have to wiggle it and twist it to get it to work. Ideas?

Does the wheel have a diamond on one of the spokes.
If not it is a repro and that may be your problem.
The insulation on the wire is substantially thicker than typical wires.
They may not have made the hole the proper diameter.
Mine sits in the slot and the ring just barely catches on several spots.
Hope that this helps.

Thanks Fil, yes the wheel has the diamond on one spoke. I purchased a NOS horn button today and it is supposed to be the correct one according to the part numbers. I'll soon find out. I will have to destroy the one that is in the wheel now to get it out. The only reason I'm replacing it is that you have to fiddle and turn the button to get it to make contact and work. It's not reliable at all. I'll figure out the connection issue when I get it out and before installing the new one.

Ok, I got the new horn button today and it is the same pn as the last one I sent back by another vendor. In searching through the internet, I ran across a picture of a M151/151a1 steering wheel with a NOS horn button with the same pn as the new i just received. It appears that there is a difference in a1 and a2 steering wheel center ID. If anyone has a a1 that they are willing to measure with a digital caliper, I would appreciate it. My two NOS a2 wheels measure 1.955" ID and the new horn switches measure 1.995" OD., .040" larger than the wheel center hole. The old switch I took out measures 1.945" OD and the snap ring fit also. Problem was that someone had taken the button out of the metal back and buggered up the crimp in trying to refit the rubber button and the switch did not work most of the time. I replaced it with one supplied to me later and that switch just fit the whole but does not work properly either and doesn't fit down into the wheel center for good ground to the case. It's just the little things that drive you buggy. Reference, the pn I just got was 2590-973-3186 and dated 1966.

The part number you have is for an A1. Dated 1966, A2's did not come out until 1970.

That is what I thought but the vendors insisted is was for all 151's. Guess I'll keep looking.

Thanks Rick

I think the buttons are the same on A1 or A2, Fil may be on to something with the wheel difference.

As I said, the original horn button that was beat up is the correct diameter and fit with the snap ring installed, it was just damaged from the rubber button being taken apart. Both of the steering wheels are NOS and have the diamond cast into them as did the on that came on the mutt that was shattered and falling apart from age. The NOS wheels centers are round as measured with a digital caliper and both measure the same and were not purchased at the same time or from the same vendor. I guess I'll leave it and keep looking. It is possible that the buttons are all the same but, I'd like to see an a1 wheel to check the center hole dimension myself. Yes, the wire on the new ones is much larger diameter ie; about .206" compared to .150" for the old one I have. New button is shaped differently on the back also. I have pictures of both designs. I'll drop the subject, just thought someone else had run into this.

Cav, I did mine years ago and I'm pretty certain I got my horn kit from TNJ Murray's. About 9 years later, a friend was repairing his horn button and wire. He purchased what was said to be the correct kit from a dealer in Europe. It was a much larger button, circlip and core. It was off of an M-series truck and was of no use for his mutt. He did obtain the correct kit from a US supplier.

You should contact your local dealers BUT make sure you specify Horn Button Repair Kit p/n 5703314, NIIN 2590-00-062-9840. This one fits straight out of the box.

Try Jeff at Frontline and TNJ Murray but don't accept substitute parts.

Ken,
Thank you very much. Thanks to all for your input.
Maybe I'm not as crazy as I was beginning to think, then again, don't ask my wife for her opinion. She has other ideas since I own a MV, 2nd one. But, first wife.

CT..... Mark wanted to contribute these pictures but wasn't able to do so, so I've posted them on his behalf.

Mark says "I measured with a caliper, both were 1.6" diameter."

The NIIN and part number I gave you were for the M151A2 and these are the numbers to use from the 1971 NIIN creation date.

Rick, I thought you said they were all the same. Plane Jane M-151's to the A2's ? 1960-1980's :?:
