Unread post by curtsm151 » March 22nd, 2019, 9:00 pm

Is there a way to replace the old bread box type voltage regulator on a 1961 Mutt?

 There are solid state replacements readily available.
Kind of pricey but a good choice.

From what I know it is simply plug and play.

I replaced mine, and as Fil said, it is simple "plug and play".

Don't have to replace the volt gauge with an amp gauge?

It will be covered in any of the -20 manuals from probably 1970 on up since that is about when they changed over to the later style regulator. As far as part number if you go to any of the surplus dealers and look for a regulator for the 25 amp charging system that is what you will get. The breadboxes have not been available for 30 years. The manuals are on this site for free download.

so if i go this right...get the proper solid state regulator for early m151 (1961). Then just remove old bread box type and replace using the same wire harness.

Yes..round wire harness with metal screw on ends...I use spanner wrench to loosen and tighten.

I want the 25 AMP / 28 VDC regulator?

As Rick said, yes, there are two amphenol connections, I think one is a 3 prong and the other 4.

I would get rid of the bread box and get a 60 amp Alternator.
