Oil Pump Priming

Unread post by bazookajoe » November 28th, 2016, 4:36 pm

In reference to the mutt engines that i am rebuilding,I had removed the oil pump on each for inspection and cleaning, These engines are going to be in storage for quite a while before being used ,,,,maybe a year, maybe 10 years. I had read somewhere to put vaseline in the oil pump to insure it will pull oil when back in service as it won't prime itself when dry. What are the methods you guys use after a rebuild on these engines?

Can't hurt, That is how I prime a new one on high performance engines I want oil to in a hurry. The Vaseline melts quickly so it does not interfere with anything. I have no idea what Vaseline looks like after ten years though. I have fired up engines that have sat for much longer than that with nothing in them and the oil pumps primed just fine so I would say go for it.
