Connecting Rod and Main Bearings

Unread post by bazookajoe » November 19th, 2016, 7:41 pm

While doing a freshen up on some mutt engines I was wondering if you guys would just install new bearings or just leave the originals in, I am noticing a little wear on the inserts but the crank is smooth and shiny, so is it SOP to install new while its apart or leave well enough alone.

Plastigauge the bearings and if they are in spec leave them alone. Same with rings, if they are free and you get a good compression reading and the crosshatch is still visible in the cylinder leave them alone also.
That is my advice, Now ME, I just CAN'T leave things alone!! I would be replacing bearings, rings, oil pump etc. So in my case if it has good compression and good oil pressure I put new valve seals and gaskets on it and walk away! I don't even drop the pan unless it is leaking.
