Fuel tank

Unread post by 1SGCAV77 » January 28th, 2021, 11:26 am

Good morning to all. Going to be a good day. Yesterday I removed the fuel tank from Jeep to satisfy my curiosity. What type of antique trash would I find? Shazam....clean as a whistle. No trash, no rust, decent paint job in cavity. Under belly of fuel tank same way. Good paint, no rust, no shiny spots from rubbing.

I removed the tank cover to inspect inside. WOW. Shiny as a new one would be. No rust at all. [attachment=1]E9B106D8-8601-4FF8-A519-1BA83DE42B9B.jpeg
But there were nice deposits of sand in each corner. Fine sand. This fits with the history of this Jeep. Came from PDO in California in 1979. Apparently it spent most of its Army career in a dry climate. Evidence is right there...in the fuel tank.
I also got lots of sand from back of “dash” when working on instruments and such.

The shop towel of sand was one of four. Planning on giving inside a alcohol bath to wash remaining sand into one corner. When dry will remove with shop vacuum.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that sand had been responsible for polishing the innards of your tank...
