Undercoat just gives water a place to hide and rust away and by the time you see it a huge chunk of body has fallen off! With a good paint the protection is just as good and you can see any rust bubble right away and address them before any damage is done.

Think you are right Rick, I'm sure when it ages and starts cracking it would start holding moisture and dirt, though I doubt it will see much rain in the future. I want to stay original anyway, so a few coats of Gillespie should do the trick, probably going to paint the undercarriage before I start the body, going with a coat of Rustoleum Rust Reformer and 2 coats of black. Stay tuned, more to come.

Got it stripped down, here's a better pic of the undercarriage, my dog is loving the air condition, so am I.

Got the front end cleaned up and painted, several evenings of degreasing, scrapping and wire brushing, hopefully I can get the body painted before it gets too cold.

Well I'm back, been a long winter, been catching up on a couple motorcycle projects, had to send the crank off for rebuild on latest one, so I have a couple weeks to work on the ambulance. Need to get it outside and do some more sanding and painted, decided to fix my extra light switch hole, when they demilled it, they decided to put a ROPS in it, so they moved the hole, wanted it original so I had to repair it. I cut the patch piece out of a crushed windshield frame I have, paint matched pretty well , got a little warpage from the heat even after using air to cool it down, should be able to dolly it out, plus the data plate will cover most of it. Sprayed some primer on it to keep from flash rusting, didn't turn out bad.

Hoping to get some paint on it tomorrow, all body work is finished.
