On the last week end we had great weather. So I started to work on the body again. One day of grinding of the old paint and giving it a base layer with red primer on the metal parts.
I then gave the engine compartment another layer of olive drab shade 24087 as well as the underbody.
The upper body was painted in the light green as the base color for MERDC
Since my A2 was deiliverd in 1973 it should have been delivered in olive drab as well as the underbody. As I understood MERDC was simply put on top of olive green.
Played with the bushings of one of the rear axels and installed it.
After months of cleaning, grinding and dirty work plug and play begins. Finally...

Some more pictures of the recent basic layer of paint.
I decided to go for a CARC green. Although according to the manuals it should be e forest green in a very light shade. However, most NOS parts I bought like new windshield frame have CARC green as base. Overalls the one I used is 2-3 tones lighter than the normal CARC. So I think its perfect.
And one can see the millions of holes for radio equipment. I left most of them in since I am going to build it up as a radio truck.

I escaped on some easter obligations and was hiding out in my outdoor workshop. So just some easy stuff like installing the radio brackets, antenna base mounts as well as the soft top skelleton.

So finaly things are going to the "plug and play" direction.

Installed the first wheel this week end.

I did not tighten any of the bolts and also did not install the splints. Will use the right torque and tighen everything once the engine and all drive train components are in. So the wheels and springs do have the acual weight.

I hope you do know that many people got injured by jacking up cars on bricks. These bricks are not designed to hold any significant load in the orientation you are using them. I hope I see correctly that the weight of the car is supported by other means in your case.

Horst, thank you for pointing out. The weight is also on the engine cranes. So all backed up! I know my brick construction looks super scary.
My wife always freaks out when she sees it. :D

I KNEW Rick was gonna say something about those bricks!

But he's right.

Your project is looking mighty fine.

Wasn't me! But I did think about it. At least they are better than American concrete blocks laid on their sides.

I love the fact that he kept the wrinkles. That truck has character and lots of it! Very cool. 8)

TJ, my intention was to keep all the dents. I removed the rust and put in new floors etc. I tried to keep a look on the outside as the US Army would repair their trucks.
Mechanically however, everything will be new. Like brakes, suspension, lights etc.
Practically I think the Army would have never done this. I have seen many vevichles that came out of auctions that were in a really bad maintenance condition.

Here is my "back up" when I am working under the truck. I am not only using the fine bricks.

Image

It is an original truck jack that came out of the Flint Kaserne in Bad Tölz. I got it from the guy who got it from the motorpool in the early nineties when the Kaserne was closed.

It`s a massive jack. Can pump up to 5 tons. Still keeping the pressure. Fits the M151 very well I would say.

That's where I'm at right now....but I'm taking care of the gremlins first, a bit at a time, so as to be able to enjoy the truck while it's "new" to me. I've had the rear end out for a week and I'm starting to get itchy to get it back together (still waiting on a U-joint). Long experience has taught me not to do a full tear-down until I have all my ducks in a row because Murphy has my name and address!

Once I start getting bored with it, I may bring the body up to "combat ready" condition. Despite it's rather deplorable cosmetic condition, it's amazing how much interest is shown to my truck at the local car show. It looks so bad I've named it, Booger, much to my son's dismay. I expect xloflyr (who is local to me) will soon have his truck up and going and I'm quite sure he'll bring his truck to the show as well. It'd be fun to park them alongside one another as sort of a "before & after" comparison. He has a professional body man in the family so his is getting the full treatment and from what I've seen, it looks stellar.

Cheers,
TJ

Now tackling the front suspension and front wheel bearings.

I opened up a NOW wheel bearing package and the bearing were made in Germany. And yes, they package was labeled for the M151... :D

I had disassembled an 151 engine only to find connecting rods from Hitachi. So everything is possible.
