Re: M718A1 restoration
Got about 70% of the CARC removed, scrapping where I can and using heat where well bonded, got everything pulled except suspension, should hit the rotisserie in a few days. Whats is my best option for paint? want to go back original 24087. Have to repair the dash panel where they repositioned the light switch when installing the ROPS.
Re: M718A1 restoration
For you it would be Rapco. I always use Gillespie paint. I hear the guys on Steel Soldiers always talking about getting Behr paint mixed at Home Depot but I kind of have my doubts on house paint on metal. You could go to an automotive paint place and get it matched in acrylic enamel or single stage urethane but PRICEY! The one thing you do not want to scrimp on is the primer, that is what will hold the whole job together. A good primer/surfacer/sealer.

Re: M718A1 restoration
I think I will go with Gillespie, will a gallon be enough for a couple coats?
Re: M718A1 restoration
Should be but talk to Mark at Rapco, he knows everything you will need and can probably recommend compatible primers. One thing he told me years ago was to be sure you have a powered shaker and shake the hell out of the paint before using it. The solids settle out and that is where the dulling agents are. If you do not get that stuff thoroughly mixed you will have one of those shiny Presidential mutts!

I second that as that's what my mutt looked like, but I did dull it some with comet cleaner/solvent/fine emery paper/heat gun.Still have to let it sit in the sun for 20 years as the kicker!!!

Re: M718A1 restoration
I also read about the Steel Solders guys using Behr paint mixed at Home Depot. So I bought a few samples, I was amazed how it sprayed on smooth.
It was the Behr that I used when I created these samples for trying to match the color that was on my M151.

If you want, I can send you a "spare" cut out of the area you need.Hambone wrote:Got about 70% of the CARC removed, scrapping where I can and using heat where well bonded, got everything pulled except suspension, should hit the rotisserie in a few days. Re: M718A1 restoration
So I can chime in on the Bher paint. My Ferret is painted with it. On the plus side, it’s is durable and easy to get. It’s also easy to touch up. Bad side, make sure you prime everything that chips before touch up. It’s water based paint and it will cause rust on bare steel before it dries out. Also, mine is desert tan and the color def changes over time in areas that get worn. For example, where people grab to climb in and out is a different color than untouched areas. It’s not wearing off or through but it gets smoother and in my case, more yellow. Overall, I would use it again on a motor pool driver type. For a real restoration, stick with real auto paint.

Re: M718A1 restoration
I've always read if you have a MV painted in carc it would be stenciled on the body with a date, think I found it, hope I haven't taken in too much through the intake.
Re: M718A1 restoration
Yep, you found it.

Re: M718A1 restoration
Making a little progress, not going as fast as I hoped, a lot of work taking it to bare metal, putting a coat of self etching primer on as I go to keep it from flash rusting. The underside won't be as bad, no carc under there.

Re: M718A1 restoration
After 60 days the carc has finally disappeared but the callouses on my hands haven't. Time to flip it over and tackle the bottom, going to powerwash it and hit it with a wire wheel, at least you will have to get on your back to see any flaws under there.

Re: M718A1 restoration
It's been a hot summer here lately, 98 today, finally got some a/c in the shop so now I can get back to work. Got it on the rotisserie, need to pull the rear diff. and the exhaust, haven't found any rust to speak of, little surface here and there, time for a good power washing and paint. What would be the best for the underbody, should I just paint it or undercoat it? Just has a light coat of dirt underneath, you can wipe it off with your hands, thank god it wasn't Arkansas river bottom mud.
