Serial Number

Unread post by jim4164 » April 15th, 2016, 11:06 pm

Does each M151 body have a unique serial number that can be used to identify when it was made? Or is there another, better, way?

Unique serial number? No. They have a body build number that one of our member can use to get you pretty close. There is no VIN number on a M-151. Do you have an A1 or A2? I can tell you where to look from there?

I believe mine is an A1. For sure it is not an A2.

Does it have front turn signals on the fenders on raised bosses? And does it have a third light in the rear over the right tail light? If so it is an A1. If not it is a straight 151. If it has the composite front turn signals in the buckets in the front of the fenders it is an A2.

Very helpful, thanks! The front turn signals are missing but there is a raised mount on the flat top of each front fender where they would be attached. On the right rear, in addition to the large brake light (like the one on the left rear) there is a smaller light fixture above and to the right of the larger light fixture. Must be an A1? So where can I look to find the body build number?

Ok, You have an A1, Look on the cowl right above the valve cover for a rectangular metal tag. It will have some numbers on it. It may or may not be there. If it is not there look on top of the frame rail just under the edge of the grill on either side for a foil tag with the numbers. The foils tag is delicate so if it is there be careful with it. These are body identification numbers and not serial numbers. But they can be used for dating the vehicle by Ken the Mutt Guru.

Thanks much, Rick. The A1 is stored remotely over in Nevada for the winter so I can't check for numbers now. With all the snow in the Sierra this year I won't get it out until probably late May. I'll check it then. In the meantime I'll review photos I've taken over time to see if I can find a number. You're a great resource. Thanks again.
