Not sure the official name but my understanding is that they were only issued in armored vehicles. They are often added to other vehicles but they were originally intended for armor.

I don't recall seeing one in an M59, which doesn't mean they weren't in there. That would have been about 5 years before the M113's. I know they were in the M113's.
There are at least two variations. Later ones/(current?) has a blue "night" light, the earlier ones had a red "night" light.
Not terribly hard to find, although I see more of the blue ones than the red ones.

There were different lights inside the M59
Inside Command track was lit up like a Christmas tree at night bright white so we could see the maps and grid charts Overlays etc. when the doors were opened we went to red lite/
The 113 had the red interior light . we were always careful about light signature.

I had a similar one inside my M109 Shop van that was hauling our PLL (Prescribed Load List=parts) and like GerryM stated as soon as the doors were opened, all lights changed to red for light discipline. The other M109 van in our HAWK unit had blue lights.

As an M113 driver and later mechanic assistant working in a Mech Infantry unit, these were referred to as "dome lights".

We had them on the tanks too. We always just referred to them as dome lights or tactical lights. When I became the Battalion Commander's driver I mounted two of them in the roof of my Humvee. We used to slide a plywood panel under the vinyl roof to keep it from sagging and filling up in the rain. When you install them like that you have to run a ground wire as well.
