Good afternoon folks. I'm planning on converting my M151A2 over to a USMC vehicle in the next few weeks and was hoping that someone could help with a couple of questions I have regarding the MERDC camo pattern and the unit markings on the vehicle. I'm interested in painting my truck as an early 1980's USMC vehicle patterned after those seen in Beirut.
- My first question isn't really a question, so much as confirming what I think I already know. This is the summer verdant MERDC palate, correct?
- My next question is in regards to vehicle markings. Any idea what the markings are on the panel behind the front tires? It appears that it was primarily the 8th Marines in Beirut from 82-84, but the number is too short for a RUC number and the horizontal diamond or brackets around the number wouldn't be correct for the 2nd Mar Division (assuming that the diamond is supposed to indicate 3rdMarDiv).
Thanks everyone and I look forward to your feedback.

Re: USMC MERDC and Unit Markings Question
I can't help you with the unit markings, that is a long time after I was in and I flew around in choppers instead of riding in mutts. But I can help with the paint. If you go to the top of any page here you will see right under the header a list of titles, go to the Manuals title and click on that and then scroll down to the Paint and markings manuals. You will find everything you need there.

Re: USMC MERDC and Unit Markings Question
That lozenge shape is the 3rd Marines. The number inside the lozenge is the "loading" number. That's what I was told by David C....the Equipment Specialist (Light Fleet) at MARCORSYS Command, Albany, Ga. some years ago.
If you intend to change your vehicle to USMC format, don't forget that you will have to track down the Marines-specific front bumper plus the square hub cores for each wheel-hub.You will most likely need to find the vent-line to the brake master cylinder cap, too.

For GP, the paint markings are different, but some jarheads probably painted it!

Re: USMC MERDC and Unit Markings Question
Thanks Ken! My initial thoughts regarding the lozenge shape/horizontal diamond was the 3rd MarDiv as well - but the 3rd and 4th Marine regiments weren't in Beirut. Operations in the Mediteranian were just about the exclusive domain of the 2nd Marine Division with the 6th and 8th Marine regiments there in the early 80's.muttguru wrote: ↑September 21st, 2021, 5:48 pmThat lozenge shape is the 3rd Marines. I'm doing pretty good on USMC parts and have the bumper and hub cores/caps. I even have a fording kit for it, so I've still got some assembly to do before I paint anything.
