My wife and I were walking on the boardwalk at the shore yesterday in the beautiful weather and there was an older couple in front of us. I had noticed the braided veterans hat but that was about it. I was wearing my plain Army hat as I always do. Then this gent was looking at something but not where he was walking and stepped on the edge of the walkway and twisted his ankle and down he went in a heap! all these people just stood around staring! I kind of ran the best I could to him and got down on the ground and he was all upset about how stupid it was to not pay attention to where his damn feet were. That was a good sign, his sense of humor was still there. I helped him get his limbs untangled and he sat there checking himself over to make sure everything worked and then I helped him up. I bent down and picked up his hat and noticed he was a Korean war vet! This man turned out to be 91 years old!!! I said thank you for your service in the forgotten war. He looked at me a little surprised and then he said "you were Vietnam weren't you"? I said yes, I was. He said, and thank you for serving in the other forgotten war. I hadn't even noticed but a small crowd had gathered and everyone was clapping. He said "you notice how they all notice us now that we are old and feeble?" That was when he told me he was 91 years old, and he was far from feeble!! Someone had called the police as soon as he fell so they were there, and clapping, and one of them asked if he falls often. He told the cop that this was the first time he has fallen since the last time "I was drunk". The cop asked when that was and the gent said "45 years ago!"

We never go to the shore but something just told me it was the day to go and that made my day, month and year.

I would like to give a huge THANK YOU to all you veterans!
Our lives are made so much better because of you.

To Rick.....good job.
My Dad is a Korea vet at 87 and in declining health, and I would hope someone would help him in a case like this. Thank you for that and sharing the story.
Dad was running the bulldozer last week and when walking back to his pickup he fell, and it was quite a job to help him back up. He WON"T GIVE UP.
Still crazy after all these years.
The OD bug bit me in 1970......and I have never been the same

That's a nice story Rick. There's more of that out there, we just don't hear about it very often. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing the story Rick. This past March I was in rehab for a knee replacement. There were four of us veteran sat together in dining facility for each meal. One was a 95yr old WWII veteran. He would share a story each meal. Occasionally he repeated one but we always listened. I became very close to Mr. Loftin. I stayed until he got tired and wanted to go to his room. I always accompanied him back to his room. Made sure he was comfortable before going to my room and writing down his story. He passed to Heaven two weeks after I left rehab. I was not able to attend his funeral, but watched on Facebook. A tear forms as I write this. I will forever miss him.

I did not go to Vietnam. Five of my classmates I started school with did but didn’t come home. That was a great loss for a class that only had 29 students. My thoughts and prayers go out to all veterans and families on this day of remembering. My thoughts and prayers also go out to those still serving.

GOD BLESS ALL AND OUR GREAT NATION.
