Stars
Gents,
If i'm reading the painting TM correctly, except for the larger star on the hood, stars are supposed to fit in a 3" diameter circle for both the jeep and the trailer. Is that how you folks read it?
The reason i'm asking is that i see stars all the time that are clearly larger than that...so many, in fact, that it makes me think i'm either reading the TM incorrectly or the size standard back in the 60s and early 70s was much larger.
Not looking to start a fire with a poll question...but...can somebody sound off and tell me if the stars on a 72-ish A2 are supposed to be 3 inches or something bigger?
Thanks!

Re: Stars
The star on the hood is also supposed to be on the front of the hood, and with the point facing forward. Look in period pictures and you will find it facing backward, forward, and often much much larger than it was supposed to be. Sometimes practically covering the entire hood.
Seems there was a right way, and there was the way it was done.

Re: Stars
I will check my research papers on the stars. I don’t recall the TM from memory, but I have the information. I do recall, the
star on top of hood...visible from the air, with windshield down. On M151 series that is a 12 inch star.

Re: Stars
More research on “National Symbol” the Star..... Tech Bulletin 746-93-1, 26 Oct 1964. Table A lists the size for stars.
Section 11- National Symbol, sentence C, gives information of how and where to apply. Now this is where the discussion starts.
A 20 inch Star on top of hood is obscured with windshield down. So...here comes the 12 inch for the hood. Period pictures as earlier suggested is great reference.

Re: Stars
This is how they were placed in 1961-1964 in Germany. Sorry but that's the best one I have of the top of the hood.

Dee...you're probably reading the TM correctly. But the first question is.... "Which TM?"Mutt Hunter wrote: ↑October 21st, 2020, 8:41 amGents,

What's the TM number and the print-date?

Re: Stars
Ken,
I'm reading from the 1990 manual--and was primarily interested in the "other" stars on locations other than the hood. Here's an extract from the relevant page:

Re: Stars
...and i see now that they cut the size of stars in half after Vietnam. Looks like 6 inches in the extract above in green, and 3 inches in the extract i provided. I guess that clears it up...and explains why i was seeing way bigger stars on what would be "period correct" jeeps.

Re: Stars
Rick, in my photo above and below you can just see it between the plywood door and the rear wheel, it is on both sides.
