Here we go again. It's tracking west of me so I'm on the bad side. Good news is it looks like it keeps shifting west. Bad news is it keeps shifting west towards the same people effected last go round. Waiting on the UPS man to deliver overnighted water level loggers for measuring the surge. No fun if you are not waiting till the last minute.

What I worry about is the dreaded tornado, been in close contact with 3 of them, you don't get days of warnings, only minutes.

Only been involved in one tornado worth mentioning and that was in Oklahoma while driving a tractor trailer. I was at a small truck stop eating when the alarms went off and I was headed out the door when the young lady pulled me back and said "you are coming with us". They had a storm cellar and we all went down there and the twister blew by about a 1/4 mile up the road. Thankfully this was out in no mans land so there was nothing there but reality kicked in when I saw that my trailer had been blown almost 180 degrees around to an almost jackknifed position! The only reason it did not go over was the 60,000 lbs. of steel in it. If I had left I would have driven right into it! We have had several here in NJ but none were even close to what you guys get down there.

My experience with twisters was in Ohio during a friends and family gathering at a friend's farm in the 60s. The farmer received a phone call from another farmer (those guys were pretty well connected even back then) and suddenly we're all be hustled into the basement...kids, adults, everyone. When I found out a tornado was coming, well....I wanted to see it. And I was just old enough and savvy enough to wait for the right moment to sneak back upstairs when the adults were busy herding the younger kids.

I got more than I bargained for in the doing of it, too. Talk about timing! As soon as I got upstairs I watched a large Buckeye tree get plucked from the ground by a giant invisible hand and tossed to the side...much like pulling a weed. Well, you just can't NOT watch that happen. I just stood there gawking. Oddly, that took place without the usual freight train-like roar we usually have in the movies. Just the clatter of odds and ends hitting the house and glass breaking somewhere. But after that show with the tree, survival instinct took charge and I made a hasty retreat back to the basement, older...and just a little bit wiser.

All would have been well but for the fact that I was still not old enough or wise enough to keep my mouth shut about it. Dad never tanned my hide for my many near-death experiences (but, for which I always received a helluva talking to). However, I was not immune from corporal punishment. Nope! I did get introduced to a fine hickory yardstick or two for my other, lesser transgressions. Dad really gave me a long, drawn out and well-deserved dressing down on that matter which I know realize was more parental guilt for not having kept an eye on me.

Simply put...I was always one of those kids who would always willingly stray from the herd. Adventurers. Every family has one.

All good. Lost power for about 12 hours but no damage. Just leaves and small branches came down. Was able to get the water level loggers setup in time and recorded some good data. Was lucky this go round.

I hope you weren't logging the water level in your basement!
