Garage floor

Unread post by Redlight » August 26th, 2020, 11:08 am

Now that my 2 car/jeep garage has been done for about a year i am looking to finish the floor. Any recommendations with about a $5-6K budget. Can I do an epoxy floor, a tough floor paint, or plastic tiles. I will be power grinding and then power washing first. It is smooth now and I do woodworking and auto repairs in it now. Brand names would be helpful. I live just north of Boston and they do treat the roads with heavy amounts of salt. It is not heated.
Thanks.

Well.... mine is concrete and has stains and paint and who knows what over the years. It's an active mechanic garage, so it is what it is.

If you did plastic tiles I would make sure to have extra ones left over and a away to change out tiles if they get stained or damaged.

Epoxy is tough, but I have heard folks get the flecks added to the surface and then they can't find little parts that get dropped on the floor.

In the last shop I worked in I was asked if I wanted to do anything to the place when I first took over and I said I wanted to paint the floor. I used plain heavy duty garage floor paint in gray and that was the best thing I ever did! It is now 34 years later and they tore the building down and sold the building itself, it was a metal frame prefab, the concrete slab is still there and still painted!!! It made it so much easier to keep clean and also to find things when dropped. It could get a bit slippery if it get real wet but I doubt you are doing fleet work like I was. When I was promoted and they hired a new guy to do that job all he did was complain because "it is very slippery when it gets oil on it". Welllll, Clean up after you make the mess or better yet don't make the mess to begin with! Work smart and you will prevent spills. It was a sad day for him when he fell under my control when I took over all of the maintenance people.

I would use a epoxy paint.
It will hold up well and last a long time .

One of our own members has a very large rubberized mat with a surface that looks like diamond plate so stray parts don't go very far. I've no idea where he got it but It's big enough that you can walk around his M37 and still stay on the mat while it's parked on it. Oil, other stuff...nothing seems to have any effect on it. It's as tough as woodpecker lips but kneeling on it doesn't hurt your knees. Best of everything, IMHO. I know this isn't what you had in mind but as a work surface, it's unbeatable...and if the day ever comes, you can take it with you.

By the way, painting your floor with a non-skid preparation is yet another option.

Is there a brand of epoxy paint that is better than the rest?

I couldn't say but I'd start by checking with Eastwood. They always have a lot of neat, high end, garage-related stuff and that might be a great starting point. Their prices are always high. However, ya gotta start somewhere! Go from there.

When I did my garage up in Baltimore about 15 years back I used Rust-Oleum Epoxy Shield from The Home Depot. was still looking good when I moved to Florida 5 years later.

Those are very nice options... Now, all I need is an actual garage!

I am liking the Garage Floor Rolls. I could lay that down once I am done restoring. Cover the stains. :|

I did mine with ArmroPoxy about 8 years ago, added color flakes and sand finish for anti slip. Has held up great, the sand finish catches dirt a bit but without it it would be very slippery when wet. I think the whole kit was less than $350 for a double garage. I just took my time and followed the directions, quite easy.
