Hambone - too cool that your sons are into aviation! 8)

RickF - read you "lima charlie" on offensive content...

Hare are some pics of my 1966 Piper Cherokee 140. I won a trophy at the Cherokee Fly-In and one here locally at a Wings and Wheels event at my airport. My 1987 Grand National won a trophy too... :D

I know where a Cessna 175 is sitting. Could be bought cheap. Flying got too expensive for me.

Like the plane and love the car, I tried to buy a regal T type for several years. The guy was on again off again on selling it and I finally gave up. I don't know if he ever sold it but if he held onto it then it was worth 20 times what he was thinking about selling it for in the 80's.

Well, You just hit it off with Hambone! One of his kids is a pilot/instructor and the other just soloed I believe.I Learned to fly through the CAP but before I got my license I found girls, yep, sex drugs and rock and roll. It was that period. Then I got drafted. So the money was gone. I can fly a plane but not legally. If the pilot dies I can land it. he guy I mentioned before, Toptiger, was an attack helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He also had the largest private collection of small metal model aircraft in the world. Google Geoffrey Webster. He was a millionaire many times over but he NEVER forgot where he came from nor those who fought for this country. He was the consummate practical joker also, He would call me from anywhere in the world just to talk because he was bored. But he called once with the absolute perfect southern accent, ( He was from Mass.) and left me a message and had me totally convinced that I had purchased a lot of 120 immersion heaters from Gov liquidation. It wasn't until the end of the message when he real quickly gave the phone number to call that I recognized his number. The ironic part of that is that I ended up buying two of those heaters from the guy who did buy them. But he had a twin engine float plane at his house in Frostproof Fla. He even offered to let me fly it as long as he took it off the water. I never got the chance since he passed before I got down there. He actually stopped flying because he knew something was wrong, he told me he just didn't "Feel right". Turns out he had a brain tumor. He was on the forum to the end though,as was Ralph Fuller. Both tough and very well respected officers.
You sure have some unique friends Rick - would have enjoyed drinking a beer with them and hearing their stories!

Neat that you were with the CAP before "the devil" :D lured you away...

Always good to know how to land "in case..." and you know a landing is technically considered "a controlled crash"... (you slow the plane down until no more lift is created).

Small world - I bought two new in the box immersion heaters from Uncle Sams Retail Outlet (they shut down, but I bought a lot of mil surplus from them - they had the best boxes to reuse and a "master of box taping" in the shipping department... sniff, sniff :( , I miss that place... :( 8)

Now that I'm older (61), seems like my friends are passing away way too early... :(

I trained out of Midway Airport in Chicago in Cessna 150s, 152s, and the 172s. I thought a Cessna 175 would be a tail-dagger, but Wiki said your plane was made from 1958-62 to fill in between the C-172 and C-182, about 2k units produced and it had a gear reduction box

Sell some of wifey's jewelry and get back in the cockpit...

My flight instructor taught me two very important lessons on flying. An airplane will take off on it's own and it will land on it's own. You decide whether the plane goes up or not. The plane decides when it is coming down, it is up to you to control the attitude of the descent.
His other favorite saying was "Every aircraft WILL land".

And when you think about the first part it is dead on. With the controls neutral and you apply full power the plane will lift neatly off the runway at whatever it's rotation speed is without further input. While flying if the power is cut the plane WILL land, you just need to guide it down. And back when I was taking the lessons the instructor would reach over and shut of the switch and say "your engine just died, you better find a place to land". And then he would just sit back and watch. Sometimes this was as low as a thousand feet and done at 800 although that was near the end of my training and I was well within reach of the airport and his full intention was to have me dead stick it in which I did to a perfect three point landing. But they made you sweat back then. My home airport < Moorestown, NJ, Was a dirt strip with a hill in the middle of the runway. Not a rise, a HILL! You would come in and you had to time it perfectly so you were on a rise as you hit the ground or otherwise you bounced back up in the air and he would slam the throttle wide open and yell at you to do it again. And I had the pleasure of having the same instructor my dad had years before and I made the same mistakes he made. And you know I heard about it. I think everybody that ever landed there did the same thing.

And at 61 you are just a kid!!!

dad was a sergeant pilot in the RCAF during the war, but eventually was commissioned as a flying officer/lieutenant. any landing you walk away from is a good landing, any landing where you can re-use the airplane is a GREAT landing. dad flew harvards, and survived a mid air collision.
