Hmmmm, and one wonders, what of the afore-mentioned M1008/M1009 CUCVs?
Hi Jim,

See my CUCV talk to Hambone...

Seriously, if you or anyone has any CUCV questions - I could probably help in that department...

I wish I had used my 1008 that day!!! Or my F350 which I actually planned on using but wanted to try this out on a longer run since it was fairly new me at the time. The tires on it were crap in the snow, added to the inherent dually lack of traction in snow and that was a fun ride. That was in October if I remember correctly and the trees still had leaves on them. The place where I picked it up had maybe a half inch when I got there and not more than 45 minutes later when I was leaving there was 6 inches!!!! The branches were dropping all over and all I wanted to do was get back on the interstate where there were no trees. The two lane that took me there went up a long steep hill and I was just about to the top when I started spinning and all I could do is lay into it and hope for the best. Just barely made it to the top of the hill and I figured I had it made since the exit to the interstate was right around the bend................................... And blocked by a fallen tree! The one freakin' time I did not have my chain saw with me. Another 20 miles on the two lane to get to the next exit and finally got on the interstate. Drove all the way southeast to the eastern part of the state to get on the turnpike and the roads were all closed and blocked due to accidents! Spun around and went back across the state and picked up another interstate and came back across the state and finally got on the NJ Turnpike after coming through the Rutgers stadium area during the beginning of a huge football game matchup. More gridlock, but at least this far east the snow was more freezing rain than deep snow. The further south the less snow and even the rain stopped. By the time I got home the sun was starting to come out as it was setting. 11 1/2 hours to do a 3 hour recovery. Of a rusted out hulk of a vehicle that at the time I planned to cut up for body parts. Then Guy called me and asked if I thought people would buy body parts if he made them. Well, we know where that story went. I still have that 151, as a matter of fact I just moved it and it's crushed brother Monday to make room to drop a huge tree. I will get a shot of them tomorrow.
Holy cow rick!!!

I was "following your story" and it told me that was a recovery from hell...!!!

11.5 hrs for a 3 hr. recovery - I would have lost my mind... :(

One question though - tree blocked you, no chainsaw - what about the ax on the MUTT...???

Ok, now a "story" about my recovery...

This is what I emailed Neil after I got home with my "new" MUTT, trailer and parts:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Border Crossing Story"

Hello Neil,

When I arrived at border crossing (US side), Border Agent told me to pull up off to the side and wait till another Border Agent met me (I told him I had a vehicle to import).

Five minutes later, a black Border Agent arrives, gets out of his SUV and starts "demanding" answers to his questions (I think "this is not going to be good with his attitude"...) He asks "What is that?" I reply "military jeep" "Where was it made?" I replied "America". He said "follow me". So I follow him to a big parking lot, he stops, then circles to the right, I follow. He stops and angrily yells "I told you to stop", I said "you said to follow you", he yells "park it, bring your paperwork and follow me inside" (the big building we were near by). He asks me "is that driven on the street?" I said "yes, it is street legal - has turn signals, horn and seat belts. He "grunts" acknowledging my answer.

We go inside, I start to follow him and other Border Agent tells me to stop, go around the counter and wait (I was following black BA (Border Agent) into "their area", so I turn around and wait outside the counter. I stood across from a "white agent" who was talking to another BA. I was going to ask him what was the black BA's problem (his attitude) and tell him the black BA was very rude to me (so far...). By the time the black BA came to where I was standing at, the white BA asks me if I need help - I shake my head no.

Black BA asks for paperwork. I give him Caroline's packet and the four Border Import related forms I prepared before seeing you two. He asked "where is the Bill of Sale?". I said "it is in the paper clipped paperwork (Caroline's). He quickly thumbs thru it, see your parts Bill of Sale and said "is that it?". I said "no, just a parts Bill of Sale". I said "here are some documents I prepared" and give them to him. He looks at them, referred to some binder he had, wrote a few things down, stamps the four documents I gave him and makes copies of them. He hands all paperwork back and said "follow me and I'll escort you out of here".

We get to a service exit to I-87 South. He stops, gets out and walks up to me (I'm still in my Suburban) and asks "who did the paperwork?" I said "a lady friend of the seller and I did the paperwork that was in blue ink". He asks "where did you get those forms?" I said "off the internet". He said "best so far", he smiled, gave me a "thumbs up" and said to have a safe trip home. I said "thank you Officer Robinson, bye, bye".

I wanted to ask him "best so far - today or forever?", but did not want to chance it since he was in a "good mood" now and I needed to get going...

I paid no duties or fees thanks to Caroline!

Tell her I give her a "F" - that F means "Fine"... as in the "fine" purchase paperwork she prepared for me to cross into the border with!!!

Anyways, thought you'd like my border crossing "adventure"...

Regards,

Mike

Neil replied that was a "good story" and had a few of his own...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next is the statistics of my "recovery" (I keep detailed notes on stuff like this plus ALL paperwork on all my vehicles, trailers, GENSETs, etc...)

"M151A2 recovery trip statistics"

Hi Neil,

Today, I applied for title, registration and license plate. Total was $286.26 and I paid tax on 3,000 CAD ($2,256 US). License plates here are $54 per year.

Statistics:

Total miles driven: 2524

Total fuel bought: $606.19

Total gals - diesel: 207.48

Average mpg: 12.17

Hrs of sleep: 0 (I stayed up for 60 hrs straight)

Total tolls: $25.25

Total food: $34.51

Trip cost: $665.95

I also wanted to tell you, you were a "machine" (LOL...) loading up the trailer as cold as it was. I was impressed how nice and tight you packed all the parts in that trailer in spite of it being "arctic cold" last Thursday...!

I drove the MUTT about 6 miles this past Sun. Got it up to 50 mph and it was a blast to drive!

Take care,

Mike
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was "dreading" the trip to Canada because of the distance, the weather got worse the further northeast I went (TN weather the day I left was raining and high 60s), Canada weather was @#$%ing "arctic cold" and I wanted to get back to the US as soon as I could.

I came back a different route (NY, PA, VA and TN); almost ran out of diesel in NY (late at night, on I-87 South next to a mountain range and no truck stops/diesel stations to be found), lucky I had 5 gals of diesel with me in a mil fuel can and in all four states, I was climbing long-ass hills...

Made it home with no issues, tickets, breakdowns or missing parts...

END OF STORY...

Welcome to the site.

Guy
Hi Guy,

Thank you and a huge thank you for the MUTT metal repair parts you offer on your excellent web page!

Had I bought the other MUTT "projects" I looked at or considered, you would have had me "covered" with needed panels and sheet metal.

As my MUTT was "cut" before (rear of door openings and thru toolbox plus floor(s) replaced before) all required metal repairs have been done.

However, your floor panels are "superior" to whatever the previous owner(s) used to repair the floors on my MUTT... :)

Took a little while to get trough them all but n more waiting for me or one of the other mods to approve your posts, you are now official. I will put some more pics of that snow Mutt up today when I get to my other computer, it is nowhere near as nice as it looks covered with snow. Thanks rick!

Now I'm a PFC...

I remember that rank well at Ft. Campbell, no more "mosquito wings" (PVT E-2) for me - I was a "big dawg" now with a rocker under my private rank...

OTOH, I was going to do the same to my MUTT after I loaded, drop the windshield, pull the seat cushions, etc., but it was so cold in Canada I could barely focus to tie everything down on my trailer.

You guys had to see the MUTT before I loaded it. It was nearly "spotless" in Neil's airplane hangar...

I had visions of hitting heavy snow, slush, salty water, ice and my MUTT looking like yours' in that "recovery from hell" photo you posted earlier...

The rest of the story on that recovery of mine. The mutt was going to go to the scrap yard but I told the guy that had it I was interested in it for some of the panels that I figured I might be able to salvage. We struck a deal and he said he would leave the front and rear diffs in so it would roll and I might be able to rebuild them down the road. Other than that this was a cut and it was the worst reweld I had ever seen. Once Guy started making the repair panels I figure I might just weld this back together again with some reinforcement and use it as my trail machine for when I go to the Graves rally in Virginia. Hasn't happened yet due to time, space and health issues but it is still here. Here are the rest of the pics from that trip once I got home. That poor trailer had to have several tons of wet, waterlogged snow on it.

And here is what it really looks like. I can't find the pics of it hanging from the loader so you can see the bottom, it is bad.

rick, there is a place for you in "MUTT Heaven" for rescuing that jeep!

A little bit of sheet metal, some screws, 100 mph tape (to cover those difficult bends and angles sheet metal won't reach) and a coat of CARC 383 will make it look like new again... :D

Guy is waiting for your replacement panel(s) order...

MIke....Us SEABEES are more land based than water...except the amphibious ones in ACB 1 & 2. We are more of a Hybrid type,.... a mix between the Navy and the Marines...with most of our swamp training taught to us by our Marine instructors. Army engineers are " Seabee want a be"...which always gets us into trouble with them ... :D :) Again, Welcome aboard. SEABEE, NMCB-62, '69-72.

HA... Rickf has been smoking that stuff again....we only borrowed what the government owned anyway.....and of course,...we would build it and the Marines would blow it up....then we would build it again....we do have a UDT unit. Above and below the water.....and if we needed to dig a fox hole...we always had our backhole......Thanks for the encouragement Raymond ! :D SEABEE
