It arrived today! It's BIG! It's BAAD! It's HEAVY! It looks (and smells) like German engineering! It's....it's....it's SO ORANGE! and it's brand new, in the case with ALL the associated bits that are supposed to be there. And best of all...I got this thing for about $200-$300 less than others being offered on eBay. Holy smokes! (bad pun  I know)

The weather outside is sketchy so I immediately took it over to the washing machine, plugged it in, turned on the magnet and cranked it up. Nothing. Oh boy...did I just take a beating?

Grrrr...

Got a 8"x*'8 plate of steel and set it on that, turned on the magnet and cranked it up. Woo HOO! Dang! This thing sounds like a jet engine spooling up. Can you say...EAR PRO? Turns out a washing machine lid isn't enough metal to trigger the safety in the base so that function works. A bad contact between the work surface and the base automatically shuts down the machine.

So, I've got some Owner's Manual reading to do...learn the rules (things like always using the retaining strap) and learn about all the little things that can getcha, preventative maintenance, etc.. I've got the new chuck. Cutting gel and liquid coolant are on the way. Brand new armor bolts are on the way. Hope to source drill bits locally but will go through mail-order if advantageous.

The sun, moon and all the stars are lining up nicely. I'm still not looking forward to drilling what now turns out to be about 57 holes....and then counter-sinking 57 holes.

Cheers,
TJ

When the FAA sends me a letter saying I can't stack stuff any higher here... it being a 'hazard to navigation' and all that..

And speaking of rich... wasn't that an expensive Garand I saw you showing off just recently? I reckon mine cost at least $200 less than your new toy...but mine drills far more precise holes!

You put a dot on that steel and I will hit it with an AP round and you will have the cleanest 1/4" hole ever. A lot cleaner than you will get with that drill. And I can put that hole through 3/4" steel in a millisecond, how long will the drill take?

Yeah, but his holes need to be uniform and in a straight line.

TJ,
I see Jancy was bought out by Fein in 2011, we had the best luck out of the Jancys vs. the Hougen or Milwaukee, so if they are of the same quality, you won't ever wear it out.

I will say I was on pins and needles on this deal because it felt almost too good to be true. I got this for $649 and seller paid the shipping...two day air. EBay has a guarantee if the seller is not legit and will return your money...plus the seller had a long sales history and almost 100% feedback. So I took a deep breath and dove right in.

Everything every other one like this on eBay was WAY higher....by a LOT. (Check it out...anywhere between $800-900-1000!)

Seller's claims were all true. Unit is brand new and quite obviously never used, with all the associated bits. So how the heck does this happen?

The only hint is that there were more than one of these at some point...and this one came to me in a hard case belonging to another unit (serial numbers between the case and the unit don't match).

It was shipped to me in the original outer cardboard box so that never got lost or tossed... and openly shipped from a Kubota dealer. No attempt to disguise where it came from.

No real reason to think this is not legit...seller has a long, successful track record on eBay, made no effort to conceal who they were, so that kinda leaves out it being stolen equipment.

Perhaps it was something like a spite-sale out of a divorce?

Maybe they took this in trade for work done to someone's Kubota?

Maybe they are getting ready to close the business and are liquidating?

Maybe another business that failed and assets were snapped up by the seller and put up for resale?

Or maybe someone just put the wrong sale price on the thing and I hit Buy It Now before anyone noticed it? (a face-palm moment)

All I know is somebody walked away and left several hundred dollars on the table and this has to be one of my best deals of the year...so far...not counting that little jeep which made all this possible.

Anyway, this little machine is built sweet. Nothing cheap about it. Built stout, and employing great fixtures and hardware throughout. Everything moves smoothly without any slop and it just feels good, like a high quality tool should. The only drawback is I am technically not the first owner...don't have a receipt so I can't log it in for the three year warranty. Well, it won't see much use....not like a commercial unit would...so in the end, that point is moot.

Once I have all the associated bits I'll do some tests. My chief concern is the 12mm (3/8) base steel requirement which can be overcome in two ways...either by backing with another piece of steel or using the (supplied) shunt to bypass the shut-down circuit, though I did already find that it hooks up quite happily to 1/4" steel on the level. Haven't tested it on the vertical yet. So there are still some boxes to be checked before I roll up my sleeves and start drilling on the track.

Cheers,
TJ

Mine always worked well on 1/4" as long as the steel was cleaned of all dirt and grime. Paint was ok but undercoat was not. I was using 5/8" and 3/4" bits and not pushing it to hard and only ever had it come off twice and that was because of the aforementioned dirt. Once I figured that out I never had any issues.
