M151A1 Data Plate

Unread post by 1SGCAV77 » February 4th, 2020, 4:26 pm

I purchased a M151A1 Jeep in July 2018. However, I just recently found this web site. Information on data plate is as follows.
Mfd. by -- Ford Motor Co
Contract No. -- DA_20-113-AMC-02787-(T)-(MYP)
Veh ID No.-- 2J8505
Engine data plate as follows.
Serial No.--103459
Ord.Part No.--8754411
Contract No.-- DA-20-113-AMC-02787(T)
The story on this vehicle is, it was bought salvage 1979 in California. It is uncut. It has no body tags. It found its way to New Mexico. Was purchased by first TEXAS owner in late 2007. it sold to another TEXAN. But now I own. I also got a M416 with the jeep. Both are nice now after 18 months of work.
Now for questions. 1) Do the numbers go along with the Veh ID?
I have seen Viet Nam pictures on line with similar Veh ID numbers. I have copy of one picture with 2J5616 taken in Viet Nam.
Any and all information greatly appreciated.

Welcome, I am sure you will be hearing from Ken the Mutt guru soon. He is the guy who has all the info on dates. You say no tags so I am guessing you already looked above the valve cover on the cowl and on the frame rail below the radiator/grill support? Ford Motor Co. Would be a Budd tag on the cowl above the valve cover if it is the original data plate.

No body tags. I have looked in the three places, engine compartment, under radiator, transmission tunnel. Someone did an excellent job of “de-mil” on the body.
As to pictures...will send when I figure out how to send them. Am working on that project. I like to share as well as look at other folks pictures.

Most of us use Post image for pictures. Some use imgur but I have never figured out how to use that one.

Apparently some vehicles had ID numbers stamped on the spare tire support.

I removed all paint from spare tire support with tender loving care. Nothing. This vehicle may be one of those we have heard about that slipped under the radar. I recently was told a salvage operation in Okinawa. The story was that so many were “disappearing”. When a Jeep was cut in quarters, each piece counted as a vehicle. Be sure to take some salt with this story.
TEXANS almost always improve on a story.

Hello 1SGCAV,

The Contract DA20-113-AMC-02787-(T)-(MYP) would have included the 2J-series of M151A1s and as the engine has the same contract number, it is likely that the engine is original to the vehicle.

BUT.....there is no certainty that this dataplate is original to THIS body. That can only be confirmed by comparing the body-tag to the hood number. And as you cannot (yet) find the body-tag.....then its provenance can't be confirmed.

The body itself could possibly be a Ford or Willys M151 (not A1) and as such, there are other possible checks that can be done....but we will need pictures of the body to make that determination.

If you get those photos up on the Board..... we can go from there..... :D
Ken
Kind regards....
Ken

Always wanted - Details and pictures of M416 Trailer data plates & M151 data plates & body-tags for my research. Thanks!

Thanks Muttguru (Ken). Will get pictures loaded in couple of days. Will proceed from that point. Jeep does have turn signals front and rear. Front fenders are correct for A1.
Any certain views of vehicle to help with identity.

You already pointed out the turn signals, in addition to that does it have the third blackout brake light on the right rear above the tail light? The floor drains are another point of interest. There are several things in the engine compartment that can give us clues to years windshield frame, although that could have been easily changed. Seat frames and e-brake lever. If the front turn signals on the fenders are on reinforced humps where they bolt on then it is a good indicator that it is an A1. Most people that add turn signals to an older strait 151 just bolt them right to the fender.

 Does have blackout stop light above right taillight.
Front turn signals are mounted on reinforced humps.
Floor drains are pouch out like a louvre on a hot rod. Drains are at rear of floor pan on both sides.
Windshield frame has 4 defrost holes on each side. Hood bumpers are bracket with material not the rubber buggy bumpers.
The seat frames as the same types I rode on back in the day.
I will send pictures of the above statements soon.
Was troop maintenance sect Sgt. Object was to keep 90% or better available. Back in day.

Everything except the windshield is saying A1, The windshield you describe is an early straight 151.
