So I wonder if it would float even with the tailgate? Unless it seals I see water getting in there.

Say what you want but my dad had Corvairs, several o them and even a turbo vair. That was a time when I was in the junior division of the SCCA and we raced what we brung, I never flipped a Corvair and I can tell you that those cars held their own on the track. They were not winners but they were pretty damn fast for what they were. They had a ton of bottom end torque which is a hallmark of any flat plane engine. Air cooled meant very little in the way of cooling issues although the fan belt routing was a bit of an issue. And those motors were flat out tough, just like the Beetle engines. Beat the hell out of them and they asked for more.
