Ford designed the M-151. Didn't they hold the copyright laws for 10 years or more ?. Why did they have to share with others so soon ? I know Colt bought the Armalite (AR) copyrights to begin mass produce the M-16 (this is why the civilian semi auto rifle had the name (AR-15) and they had a 40 year copyright license. Sounds like Ford kinda got screwed ?

I'm guessing here but the usual drill is the design belongs to the party that commissioned it....namely the government that commissioned it. If that's the case, Ford never owned the design. They just drew up the design.

Think Bantam Car Co of Bantam, Pa. They were the ones who invented the original "Jeep" but it was Willys & then Ford who built them for the war effort. Once the Gov't accepted the Bantam design and paid them for it, it became Gov't property and they were free to do with it as they wished.
