can't find link to grinding gears

Unread post by acudanut » July 2nd, 2019, 9:54 pm

I need some advice. it's been 30 years since I was a full time Mechanic on the M-151's and I have lost half my brain. Anyway, lately when shifting gears I hear the dreadful grinding of gears. Wasn't there a subject on the matter of the top side shifter fixes. Mine needs to be realigned/fixed. ????
My clutch is fine.. for now. eeerrrrr
Thanks, Mike

Go to the board index then to technical discussion, type in search blank grinding when shifting, you'll get some responses , also sure it is full of oil.I can remember the same thing but I forgot what I did to fix it

Depends on where the grinding is occurring. Is it from first to second, second to third, third to fourth?
second to third grinding is usually the reverse detent spring issue. First to second or third to fourth is going to be worn syncronizers. Or a bearing issue in the transmission. Will it go into first and reverse without grinding?

Then the clutch is good and the pilot bearing is probably not binding. Sometimes the clutch feels good but it can be swelled and although it feels like it is releasing it is actually still touching in places.

I failed to mention, it only happens when going into 3rd gear. I still think it is in the top section ( shifter body/ synchronizer ). ? But I have been wrong many times. I am just a shade tree mechanic these days. I still need advice and appreciate all replies.

Pause just little bit in neutral between second and third before going into gear.

Ok, here is how I shift; in separate motions, from 2nd gear hit it up motion to the neutral, then move it horizontal to in 3rd position, up motion to 3rd gear, to 4th gear in a slow motion. Essentiality no speed shifting

You are probably right and it is the reverse detent spring. They used to sell a kit to repair it but I have not seen it for years. Last I saw it was over in Holland or Germany?
As has been said, when you shift you just have to take your time and make sure you are lined up before pushing straight up.

Cant the spring be stretched, I think that was an alternative to replacement... Was it surplus City in Cali that had them? Scott O&O

When it comes to springs, I've learned that most places that specialize in springs will have whatever you want in whatever size you want. By way of example, the guys at Ace Spring Service in San Antonio Texas are absolute magicians when it comes to weird and oddball stuff. I was able to replace a spring in an ancient steam whistle (think about that) just by walking in the door with the old spring and a description of the application. So, if you get stumped on getting a replacement, I'd suggest you give them a call.

Cheers,
TJ
