Info for Heater-Equipped MUTT Owners

Unread post by Mutt Hunter » May 2nd, 2019, 4:55 pm

Hi from Tampa. Hope everybody's doing well. I'm in my third week of in-possession ownership of my A2, and already having a ball with the beginnings of the restoration. I'm way luckier than most because i was able to find one that lived its operational life in the Air Force and never ended up being cut. It had two previous owners that owned it for 20-ish years each and they both lived in the arid SOCAL and AZ area. Its in pretty decent shape with nothing more than surface rust. If i could find a number anywhere on it (i can't), i'd let you guys tell me for sure how it started its life, but based on its condition and location for last 45 years, i'm betting it was at Davis Monthan AF Base in AZ.

I'd post a few "before" pictures--but so far that process has proven harder than Chinese math. I'm standing up a web site, so i'll just post a link at some point.

Anyhow, that's not why i'm here. I'm finding that the only data plate i can't have readily replaced by the usual vendors is the one for my heater. I wrote an email to the Hunter Manufacturing Company--the maker of the heater--and they didn't have any, but they recommended me to a guy across town that makes all their current data plates (Hunter still builds heaters for HMMWV's). I sent him a picture and he said he could replicate the plate.

Buying one plate is stupid expensive, so I thought i'm probably not the only guy that needs one for a restoration. I'm happy to set up a group-buy if anybody's interested. Just shoot me a PM or reply here and i'll get a head-count and let everybody know what our price per copy will be.

Thanks--standing by.

You got it figured out, now if you click on the second link from the bottom that says "hot link for forums" it will show up as a much larger picture without needing to click on the picture.

Thanks, Rick. I was wondering about that. Appreciate the guidance.

On the Heater Data Plates, if there's 10 of us interested, they will do them for $15-20 each. Based on the economy of scale they gave me, it will be closer to $15. Anybody interested?

Have you thought about checking out the MV swap meets and seeing if you can find a heater core housing? You might find a decent one that would have the tag still attached.

Hi Mutt Hunter and other G838-ers,
I too have a small rectangle with a hole at each corner and a patch of darker paint where my heater data plate was on my A2! I know Fil does not have any more spare plates BUT if another member does have one I could give it a good home in the United Kingdom (with a monetary exchange of course). If not, perhaps Mutt Hunter's plan to reproduce them could get off the ground. I am sure a modest production run would be snapped up among the Mutt community worldwide?

I'm moving out on getting a plate made. I couldn't find anybody that had one for sale or an old heater with a decent looking plate on it, so i just had one made by the company that made the heaters in the first place. For anybody interested, here are the specs on the plate.

Soon-to-be-After: Imageupload photo

Useless trivia for most, i guess--but somebody may find it useful in the future.
