M151 DIFFERENTIAL SIZE

Unread post by evgtorsen » April 30th, 2019, 9:43 pm

hi, my first post here. can any person know the diameter of the diff ring gear in a m151?,

I have an idea of changing the diff, with a LSD, my best option so far is the Toyota Chaser, Altezza or Lexus vehicles. they come with LSD and in 7.5 and 8 inches ring gear configurations an also in six-cylinder cars, that means that may handle the torque of the mutt. also, looks very easy to adapt
These Toyota models use the Torsen, same that military hummer, maybe little weak, but good enough for my application

i saw many issues about the diff mostly because of the lack of oil capacity, but i think also is a limited capacity. i found in some research that it is rated to 800fp of torque, consider the 5.9 ratio in first gear and about 120 fp of the engine, is very close to the limit. that is why am asking about the diameter of the ring gear to have an idea where i am wth this mod
I am still doing research about the diff application because the Toyota 7.5 and 8 inches comes in 4.88 and 5.29 ratios(for solid axles), but i am not sure if these ratios fit these independent suspension diff cases, it is complicated because the diff codes are confusing and one vehicle, like supras, have both, depend of the year and drive train combination. but for sure Toyota is the best, can check in eBay and see under Altezza or chaser LSD differential and can see how simple is, and easy to adapt too.

Any information will be appreciated

I can't really help you with the ring gear size but I can tell you that strength is not an issue with these differentials. I have NEVER seen a broken M-151 differential due to a power issue, even the ones that the guys in Pakistan where they were putting Toyota engines in them and diesel engines. They were using the 151 differential with different axles. That was many years ago, we do not have much contact with those guys anymore.

thanks a lot for the input. Unfortunately, there is no LSD option with this diff, except for the locker ( Suzuki and the one that came from an Italian guy).
anyway, I will continue the search

thanks again, attn. Edgar

The locker actually first came from Ron Reitfors many years ago and he did a write up on it and how to do it. It is done with a modified lock rite locker kit for a Suzuki Samurai. I have the write up but unfortunately in it he does not give exact machining details. I actually have one of those lockers sitting on my garage floor waiting to be opened up for reverse engineering. I just have not had time to do it yet.

Good, I have a lock rite in my cj5 at the front diff and works excellent, except for the hard steering, it does not differentiate with any power is applied, it differentiates when the 4wd is off and not even the clicking sound is heard, i used the originals 600x16 tires and no locking hub.
it is very transparent during normal 4x2 operations

I have them front and back of my 401 powered CJ-7. I have not been kind to them and both have worked flawlessly for 20 years.

Go here and click on the link, it will download a file. open the file and you will see all of Ron's modifications. Yes, I could make a lot of money if I had enough buyers to support the making of the stuff but I am not even getting enough people interested in rebuilt carbs for me to keep kits in stock. I certainly am not going to sink money into this stuff.

I would order 4 of the limited slips or lockers if you made them. You might start a poll to see who wants them. (2 cents). There is a market for these. Our jeeps are really not 4x4's.

WELL IS GOOD, BUT I THINK, ALL WILL DEPEND ON THE PRICE, AN NOT TALKING ABOUT WARRANTIES, I STILL THINKING ABOUT THE TOYOTA SWAP. ALSO, HAVE THE OPTION TO GO FROM 4.88 TO 5.29 IN 7.5 OR 8 INCHES GEARS PLUS THE CV JOINT AT THE DIFF SIDE
JUST A THOUGHT...

Especially large hammers. Just ask Seabee. He has a reputation for such things.
