Help identyfing my M151A2

Unread post by Peteda2 » March 9th, 2019, 8:52 pm

Hi, I recently bought a M151A2 and trying to figure out what year it is, if the manufacturer's data plate that is on the jeep is original to it, and any other info that perhaps I could find about the history of it.
It's an emissions jeep and according to the data plate manufactured by AM General Corp. I can provide photos of the data plate with the serial number. I also can provide a photo of the engine data plate, and of a small plate that is welded on the drivers side footwell. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The dataplate is very unreliable since can be easily switched.
The engine s/n is useless since engines were replaced
You can send the body number to Ken the muttguru and he can approximate its date of manufacture.
Hope that this info helps.

Check the date stamped on the horn and look for any evidence that the horn assy. is NOT original to the vehicle. ie. Do the mounting bolt heads look undamaged?

To Joe’s point look for date stamps on circuit breakers and any exposed wiring also.
While these are replacement items they may help in determining the range of date of manufacture.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will check them out. The horn has the following number stamped 51074-1. This is not the serial number. Is it a date stamp? The horn is painted black, but the bolt heads appear undamaged.

I'm gonna jump in right here with a little advice. I'm a retired cop who, at one time, was big into the whole auto theft recovery thing and one of the things I learned very quickly when I was learning the ropes is, anything (in and of itself and without giving consideration to other pieces) anything that can be removed from the body/chassis cannot be relied upon to provide anything other than general guidance as to the identity, age, or style of a vehicle.

So here, you're looking at a date of manufacture for a horn and just a horn. This was a horn that was used on the M151 series of truck (and other military vehicles) for many years and so, that information really cannot be relied upon. Use it more like a guideline.

Cheers,
TJ

Thanks TJ understood.
No easy way to identify the M151. At least I would know how old is the horn :)

True on the horn but if you find the same dates within a year or two on wiring harnesses, horn, circuit breakers and light switches then you can pretty well assume the vehicle is within those years. This is not like tracking a stolen car where most of the stuff would have been changed out specifically to cover up the identity. The only reason these items would be changed on a military vehicle is if they failed. And the chances of all of that stuff failing at the same time is pretty slim.

I have a Barstow Mutt with a known dataplate an a 79 contact date.
As it turns out the body number is 79 mfr the harness is 81 and breakers were around 80.
The horn wire was dated 82.
As best I can say is it a 79 contact vehicle.

Y'all got it right. More like a guideline....and yes, I agree that the chances of all of that failing within a short time is very remote. Remote in the extreme. But these trucks have been around for a very long time and while their provenance is known, they have been in many hands.

I'm certainly not suggesting anything untoward is going on here. Merely trying to keep things real for him so that he and anyone else following along now, or later, will understand what identifiers hold great value and what identifiers don't.

Well, he says it has the original body tag in the footwell. I have never heard of anyone actually changing one of them. They remove them but I have never seen one changed out for another. So, show Ken a picture of that body tag and he will get you real close to a date.
