Canvass Top Frame on my A2

I took the top off of my '77 A2 and went to fold the tubular frame back and out of the way. However, I discovered the ROPS will not allow the frame to fully collapse and lay flat, which to me is kind of dumb. If this is in fact normal for the A2's with the ROPS installed, the engineer who designed this setup should have his crayons taken away.

The bows should fold and lay flat snug against the back of the ROPS. Have the bows been removed and put back in a different position? Thinking about that it would not work since they would not engage the lock on the side when opened. Do you have any pics?

Here is where Rick and I disagree. I have the same issue with my A2 and in this area, mine is completely unmodified...exactly as it came from military service.

Ok, 2 to one and one with pictures. I was sure I had seen A2's with ROPS with the bows flat. Guy, I can see on yours where the bows are caught between the ROPS and the antenna mounts. I know on my A1 the bows are just a hair behind the body line but they don't hit my antenna mount. Do you have the washers between the body and the mount that are supposed to be there? Has anyone read the manual on this problem? They generally cover every detail in the manuals.

I'm not sure about the washers. I now have a top for it and haven't had it off. Again, this is how I bought it.

I seriously doubt a washer, or two, or three would allow it to lay mine flat. I just strap mine to the fuel can handle and that pretty much takes care of things. Some times I even lay my bows over the top of the ROPS and strap them to the center transverse bar. Both work.

Mine was retrofitted with a ROPS and the military seems to have been OK with it as they made no changes. Is there more than one type of bow assembly?

Well I went through my image folder as well as image searches and have yet to find a picture with the bow completly down with corner brackets and ROPS. Plenty with ROPS only or brackets only but not both.

you are in Canada. Does your A2 have the US-ROPS or the CDN-ROPS?

Bingo Ken! I can see the flat mounting plats on the fender from the Canadian ROPS. But everyone else is saying the same thing that it will not go down with ROPS. And they are not all Canadian.

My A2 is American, ex-USMC out of Texas from what I was told by the previous owner. Yes, the Canadian “74 Pattern” trucks were a modified to be a bit different, and are quite rare since most were destroyed. But, this particular truck doesn’t fall into that category. My frame only goes down as far as the ones in the pics, which I’m assuming at this point is typical for ROPS fitted vehicles. On my truck the mounting brackets bolt into welded nuts under the fender.

Forgot to mention one of the biggest dead giveaways between Canadian and American ROPS is the antenna mounting plates welded up in the upper corners of the roll bar on the Canadian variants.
