WTB M416 Trailer

Unread post by Mutt Hunter » December 10th, 2019, 4:55 pm

Hi folks. Please send me any leads (other than craigslist and ebay--got them covered) for a serviceable/restorable trailer for sale.

I'm in tampa and don't mind paying for shipping, if required. However, if you live someplace exotic, i might come get it myself!

Thanks in advance for any help.

i have unrestored m416 for sale in historic Boston. It has 3 layers of peeling paint. Rust on the floor but no rust holes anywhere. I have a brake handle to be attached but the cable is free. it has a 4 wire connector for the 12 volt lights but I have a military connector and 24 volt bulbs that I would include. PM mw with email address and I will send you photos.

it's a shame you're not near ft lewis. i live 45 minutes south, and a friend of mine has three M416's for sale, all three for $1500. not one good tub in the bunch, but the frames, axles, landing legs and lunettes all appear serviceable. going to need new tail lights, and some wiring work as well. if you had a good tub, you could buy these, and part two of them out. they have been sitting outside for several years, less than a mile from my house. he has 6 or 7 mil vehicles, and i drive his M151A2 in the parade each year.

That is a shame, indeed. Thanks for the reply though. I really appreciate it.

The bigger shame i'm noticing is that the Toyota crowd is buying up a lot of the trailers and chopping, converting, and basically destroying history to make camping trailers with pop-up tents, etc. Am i over-reacting based on a couple weeks of research, or did the "adventure camping" crowd really fall in love with M416's for some reason and are shaping the market?

That's just my perception--would enjoy reading other folks' perspectives.

Mutt Hunter, the 416's have been popular with the off road crowd for quite a while, for all the reasons you would suspect. when i sold mine, in 2014, the buyer gave me $1500, and had it shipped to australia. i guess they are really hard to find down under, and he had an A2 he wanted to pair it with.

I sold a m416 to a guy from Tennessee, or Kentucky, or there abouts. So he drove from there to pick it up and back. The grease in the wheel bearings looked good(1964 made trailer) grease looked military too!!He had no problems.

I think Guy might gain a greater following if he started laying out some stone accurate tubs for sale and a lower quality priceleader tub for the overlander crowd.

As soon as you sell a lower quality item, regardless of whether it is advertised as such, you get branded with the low quality tag by all the internet warriors. Just not worth it. Stay with the high quality stuff.

Well, I should have phrased that better.

What I was thinking of when I said that was a tub that doesn't have all the particular attributes of the military tub except that it would be dimensionally correct so as to fit on an original chassis. As we know, most adventure trailer guys pretty much wipe out all the mil spec details when they start fooling around so why go to the trouble of producing one with that stuff? By way of example, the trailer might be produced with a very basic, flat floorpan. Adventure trailer guys aren't going to haul gravel in their trailers! That is the sort of thing that I meant when I said "low quality." We all know Guy doesn't make ANYTHING in the low quality range and good on him for that! Somebody has to keep the standard!

In any case, MUTTs and 416s go together like peas and carrots and there are a lot of 416s to be had on the cheap if only a good replacement tub were available. I think maybe Guy ought to consider capitalizing on the situation. My two cents.

I want to get the majority of the 151 parts done before getting into the trailers. As Rick pointed out, we'll make our parts to match the original design and quality. As far as the trailer floor example of ribs / no ribs, once it's programmed, the machine does the work. Cycle time is a little longer but I would not offer a lower version at a lower cost. As Rick also pointed out, then you get all the internet experts giving their "expert" advice!

So glad to hear that's part of the long range plan!

Please consider making the larger 416 as well.

Nah. I was having a 'senior moment' and I screwed up when I wrote that. Well, it might have been the cold medicine as well. I was thinking the M416A1 was larger than the M416 but the difference was actually between the M100 models and the, then new, M416 series.
