The tongue on a 416 is not exactly light even unloaded but it all depends on how you load it. I pulled one with 144 20mm ammo cans 650 miles, half of which was in a snowstorm and the other half at 65 MPH with no issues at all. Same with my 116 trailers but they all have positive tongue weight. The video that Horst put up is a bit drastic on the ratio, 60% of a 5,000 lb. trailer load would be 3,000 lb. tongue weight!!!! Better have a class 5 hitch and a strong truck and frame. 10-15% is the accepted figures.

Reading those figures on that video again they say 60% of the load should be up front. Really it should say 60% of the load should be forward of the axles. A 60/40 split would give you closer to 20% on the tongue but that is acceptable as long as the hitch as vehicle are set up to handle the weight.
You've got to factor in the distance between the hitch and the axle(s) too. Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. - Archimedes

Obviously, we are discussing trailers with tongues that are notoriously short being towed by vehicles that are notoriously ill-mannered...

Let us consider the wisdom illustrated by our friend, the Chameleon. Tongue length matters! (a lot) and it is best when it is not too long, not too short but instead, is just right.

chameleon-long-tongue.jpg

Going into the business of what type of suspension a trailer has can be a bit of a deep dive but that matters as well,
along with brakes (assuming they actually work),
and type of coupling,
and the towing vehicle,
and the idea that the driver of said vehicle has the ability to apply conditional critical reasoning skills...

(example: If I do THIS, I WILL die -or- If I don't do THIS, I WILL die.)

Dunce-Winner-500x338.jpg
The biggest factor is having an operator with a good head on his shoulders.

Unfortunately, DMV continues to issue driver's licenses to some of the more dull-witted among us; a belief which seems to be predicated upon the idea that IF the driver's license applicant is actually (a) Homosapien and (b) appears to possess a level of awareness similar or better than that of a turnip, they're probably going to be OK behind the wheel of a motor vehicle (with, or without a trailer). Alas, the moment we allow for the use of the word 'apparently' and 'probably' that concept falls just short canonical thinking.

I'm quite sure you couldn't even get Vegas odds on the matter and they take bets on some spectacularly weird stuff...but, the DMV would have us believe they have it all worked out.

GO AHEAD, they said. YOU'LL BE FINE, they said.

When it came to the matter of load placement, it often seemed to be solely in relation to the available space for a load and that kind of thinking is predicated on the belief that any load can be safely put on any trailer...just as long as it fits...which is simply not true. In post crash investigation, that often seemed to be the upper limit of people's thought process.

The truth is tongue length and brain size are equally important when it comes to towing... It's not just how big it is...it's ALSO what you do with it!

Cheers,
TJ

Mr. R, I'm thinking that 1st pic may be an early. Looks like single horn hood latch and "clean" front fender.

Can't really tell from the 1 photo, looks like it is unlatched, could just be turned sideways?

I am not. It’s way over priced. Besides, I have two Encores, two A2s, one M416, one mule, and a two car garage full of parts. I have neither room or time to work on anything else.
