side panel front curve

Unread post by Litz » October 14th, 2008, 7:39 pm

Does the curve of the side panel where you pass your feet over the side by the foot pedals on the M151A2 listed as an "Emergency" sale look more squared off than is typical?

It might be the angle of the photo but it looks different than the typical curve of that area of the side panel.

Anyone else have an opinion?

I didn't notice that at first, but see what you mean now. :? Perhaps it was restored before all the replacement panels that have become available in the last couple of years. It doesn't show any of the other usual tell tale signs of a replacement tub.

Check out the rear shot, that is a tailgate cutout! The stock body is not cut below the level of the seat bottom. No body seams on front fenders to cowl area either.

That's just like my 1971 A2 that also came out of Indiana. It's a hybrid A2, I'm sure of it! No grooves on the rear fender tops either.

Buyer Beware

Unread post by Litz » October 14th, 2008, 11:51 pm

The more you look at it the more things stand out that aren't quite original. If you look at the picture from the rear looking down on the passenger side floor you can really see that the side panel front consists of three distinct angles rather than the original curve.

The tailgate cutout and the missing rear fender grooves standout now that you guys point to them as well.

I think the buyer will be disappointed after paying almost 13K and the first time a knowledgable M151 person points out all the body work that is incorrect.

Hopefully, any potential buyers have the good fortune to know to ask someone with some M151 knowledge for an opinion before paying that price.

I don't think it's a tail gate cut out. I checked pics of my own A2 at they look very similar.
Probably just the angle of the pic.

Dosen't sound like the current owner was disappointed with what he's had for a few years. I'm sure not disappointed with the one I own. No rust anywhere, uncut, original floors, firewall, rear panel, windshield, engine, mechanics, underbody and inner fender wells, as well as all original mechanics and drive train. Heavy duty 14 gauge fenders and side panels, square channel rockers at least 5 times stronger than original. Looks like, drives like, feels like, sounds like and passes for an old M151A2, but with a new skin. At least that's the way I feel about the hybrid I own.

Contacted the seller and he says he knows little about the conversion/restoration or who did it originally, just the town where he bought it. I have asked for a few specific pictures to compare to mine, but that angled curve in the foot well is exactly like mine. I'll know more if I get the pictures I asked for.

My hybrid has all original floors, battery box, tool box, windshield, firewall, inner fenders, rear panel, and hood. But it's not a Growler, a Titan, or an Encore. Many knowledgeable folks have looked at it real close, and all are amazed at the work that was done to redo it. Guesses of "weird top cut or crush demill", "experimental body", and "sheet metal worker with way too much time on his hands" have been offered. Nobody is sure why it was done, even though the "how it was done" is obvious. All agree it's still an M151A2 and not an aftermarket vehicle put together in Florida or NC, but nobody is sure exactly what it is other than a hybrid. To a non-purist, it's better than an original. Personally I own both, and appreciate each one of them for what they are, and are not. The hybrids weigh a few hundred lbs more due to the heavy gauge steel in the new panels.

there has been talk of a company in mexico that made some replacement bodies back in the 80's.... AMG sold them the tooling etc. they didn't stay in business long. maybe these are examples of those? Someone in Indiana built a few from demilled mutt parts?

all of your answers to this "mutt" can be found on 503. Rear panel was replaced due to "damage/rust". Body started life as original 151

I know we discussed one of them and I think it was this thread here on G838.

Hey Chris,

That last one is 30 minutes from here, in Richfield. I'll get any pictures you need, and have met the owner, but it's a big big project for sure. Hate to see it go to scrap, but the title and data plates would be worth a hundred bucks. The rotisserie goes with it for that price too. When it's not on ebay, I could get it for 1K, but lower that, and he don't wanna talk...yet.
