Re: engine

Rupert..... look at these two pictures and study them carefully. They are from the TM9-2320-218-20P dated 1978. If you cannot see them clearly, email me directly and I will send the pages directly to your email address. http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/500/medium/Pages_from_TM9-2320-218-20P_12-7...

Re: Coil interchangeability?

I spent the morning rummaging through the garage with some success. I found my old 'ballast' coil AND the resistor. The details are on a paper tab glued to the body and it says... USE EXTERNAL RESISTOR UNDER COIL. It was manufactured by Prestolite Division - Eltra Corporation - Toledo, Ohio. Part Nu...

Re: Coil interchangeability?

TJ.... that is a real possibility. But to test that theory, there would have to be a way to put the resistor outside the distributor housing..... the Chicom coils are 'full size' so even if you had the original ballast....it wouldn't fit under the new coil. Back in the early 70's I had a Vauxhall (G...

Re: Coil interchangeability?

A Brief History of Ignition Coils. When the M151 was introduced in May 1960, the ignition coil listed in the -20P was not the same as listed in the M38 and M38A1 parts lists. This came as a surprise (to me) because the coil was supposedly interchangeable between both distributors….as well as the M3...

Re: Coil interchangeability?

The coil to the right in the picture was the original type. After the Mil received lots of complaints about the plastic breaking where the "ears" met the coil, the redesigned coil was fitted the metal mounting ears.

Re: Dropping cylinders?

First things first. Is the power getting through to the coil? 1. Take to cap off the distributor and put it aside carefully. 2. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF. 3. Set your voltmeter to volts.... whatever the next highest volt range is shown. (for 24 volts use the 50-volt scale of the meter). 4...

Re: coils

I've just finished watching the video. An excellent pictorial.....but a very disappointing outcome for the much vaunted "New Black" coils.

The price of original GI Mil-spec coils has probably doubled today.

Re: NOS 24v Coil (1970 date)

TJ.... that is a rare item. And I do mean RARE ! My Ford A2 came with that type of coil fitted.... and it never gave me any grief.... until I drove into the garage one evening, stalled it, turned off the lights but forgot to turn off the ignition. It went off to electronic heaven....never to return....

Herm.....

That number 335869 may be a USMC vehicle...an M151A1. But....let us know what the BUDD plate on the firewall says. That's the most reliable method of pinning down the details.
