Re: New Toy, not a MV
Slight correction, it should be referred to as an "ironhead (Sportster)", not a "Shovelhead". Two completely different things.
Shovelheads were the bigger 74 cubic inch engine, made after the panhead (1965) and before the Evolution engine in 1985. (Rumor has it a guy could have gotten either a panhead or a shovelhead if he bought a new 1965, but I digress......)
Also the first year for thumb-start.
The true Shovelhead, as with all big Harley engines, have a separate transmission, whereas Sportsters have the transmisson inside the engine cases. Something, however, doesn't look right, as far as the engine.....I can't put my finger on it, but something is different.
(Hang on to ALL of the original parts!!)

It is a bowling ball, AMF made, 1000 cc. I think the side covers were a little different. I had a 1970 XLH, that was a weird bike. It had hard bags, a 3 1/2 gallon tank and a white banana seat. When I sold it the kid chopped it!!!!! I was pissed.

Re: New Toy, not a MV
I stil have my first Harley, a 1969 XLH ( only 1550 made as I recall). Someone put some stupid straight pipes on it, and I, in all my infinite teenaged wisdom, changed a bunch of other stuff, and now regret it.
I think what doesn't look right was the tops of the rocker-boxes. I thought--no, I know -after 1971, there wasn't a low depression between the front and rear valves on each aluminum rocker-box. It was a smooth curved line between the front and rear, unlike my 1969 ( and 1970s-which had the lowered area). That was one of the ways we used to tell the difference between a "bowling-ball bike" and a real Harley . I guess they went back to the old style rocker-boxes after a few years.
Anyway, congrats! My cup of tea!! I have a bunch of old Sportster parts. I tink I still have some KH and KLH parts too.

Mine ALWAYS seems to be in need of repair! 1969 XLCH. Maybe I should have gotten a newer one like yours.
