Canteen - Info required
Hi all,
Hope everyone's well and stays well, my heart goes out to the nation of Japan. They are seeing some though times and may God ease their sufferings.
Now for an accessory that I've had for sometime and always wanted to figure out the working of the top valve. Can anyone help
The canteen
The top - screw on cap, with a flip top opening too.
The top uncapped. You can see a valve in there.
The inside of the cap has this rubber funnel thingy
When I remove the funnel thingy, the valve is exposed
My question is; what's all this for ?

Re: Canteen - Info required
I think the cap allows you to connect a hose to enable you to drink with the NBC mask on?
I'm sure someone here will give you an accurate answer.

Re: Canteen - Info required
Jay you are correst. It is used in conjunction with the NBC gas mask M17? I think.Too many numbers in my head this morning. It allowed a soldier to hydrate without removing his protective gear.
Re: Canteen - Info required
It was the M17A1 that had the drinking aperatus on it to allow use of a canteen so adapted with that top. That cap was an accessory that came with all of the NBC gear*. It was not in wide spread issue prior to the first gulf war but, was available. With the M17 series of masks, a person could hydrate while wearing one but would have to hold his/her breath for about 5-8 mins while they removed the mask to do a filter change (hope it's not a blister agent).tbanks wrote:Jay you are correst. It is used in conjunction with the NBC gas mask M17? There was also a device that allows a person wearing said gas mask to perform mouth to mouth resusatation on someone.
* I'll have to double check this with my "source".

correct. I've got the full setup, incl mask, bottle, resuscitation tube, winterization filters and hood. Great for Halloween parties !
The tube connects to the valve on top of the canteen and there's a mouthpiece inside the mask to enable you to drink.

Kind regards....

I've never tried but, I think the valve in the cap only goes one way (outwards) so no real worries Sam
My friend was the CO of an NBC unit and he told me about having to "requal" every year with all his gear. For NBC guys, this means putting all of your chem protective gear on and sitting in a gas chamber for 6 or 8 hours with "live" agent. It was kind of expected that you would wet yourself as there are no bathroom breaks....

Thanks for posting that image. I used to have the M17 & M17A1 masks w/hoods and carry bags (also had the manual) but I never got around to picking up the resus. tube. Sounds like you've got the whole kit.
While we're on the subject of chem/bio gear here's a little tidbit for all of you. They make an adapter for the camelbak hydration system so that it can be used in conjuntion with a gas mask. Although the camelbak is standard issue now adays it failed the test for use in a NBC invironment so the 'ol GI canteen (with the cap at the head of this post) is still standard issue.

It's a spark arrestor, to avoid the possibility of explosion if you hit it against your fillings while drinking in an explosive atmosphere. Check T.M.320-112-wtf
