Help getting Retainer Assembly off
Gents, have a 66 A1 that was a barn find and sat for a long time. Working on the rear end now. My current problem is getting the Retainer Assemble off the Spindle Support. According to the 1982 -20 manual it should just come off and yes, I know the 82 manual is for a A2 but this part looks like it's about the same for A1 and A2. Page 8-30 (Chg 2) tells me to simply "Remove" but it is frozen in place and, before I started tapping on it I wanted to verify that 1) it really is supposed to actually come off on the A1, 2) there isn't some secret screw or such that I need to remove first, 3) that it comes straight off - not unscrew or twist, etc.
Any suggestions on removing the Assembly would be appreciated. I've been PB blasting it for a couple of days but hesitant to start hitting it with a hammer. After I get it off I'll be back for advice on replacing the seals on the wheels and bearings.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: Help getting Retainer Assembly off
are you talking about part number 21?
if yes, it comes off by removing the three bolts. Maybe someone put a gasket sealer and that's why it sticks to the casing. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Help getting Retainer Assembly off
No, I got that locking ring and eyelift off. its this big old metal ring around the spindle support. I need to take the brake backing plate off but that retainer assy won't budge by hand. All the diagrams show it coming off so I think the next step is just start tapping gently all around it. I'll try to post a diagram from the -20 to better show the part. At the moment a PITA because I am running out of warm (sort of) days.

ok, sorry, was totally on a different page, was just reading "retainer"...
this would be the correct picture, not sure what part you want to get off

Re: Help getting Retainer Assembly off
OK this helps. It is #8 in this diagram. It's on #6. #9 is already out - it came out when I took off the wheel shafts.

Re: Help getting Retainer Assembly off
Number 16 in the diagram I posted is one machined part and is called retainer. So the whole thing holding the bearings.

Re: Help getting Retainer Assembly off
Looking at the 34P that appears to be a retainer and a seal. Kind of looks like that in the pic also. I never really paid much attention to it and just knocked it out but you could always get the new parts in first and that will give you a clue as to what needs to come out and what needs to stay in.

Re: Help getting Retainer Assembly off
Correct on the Retainer being one machined part but if you look at the diagram I posted you'll see a metal ring (part #8) that is on the end of the retainer. I'm pretty sure it must come off to allow the brake backing plate to come off the retainer. That ring (shown in the photo) is the part giving me trouble.
However, I have a new plan. I believe that if I remove the six locknuts/bolts and the brake line the retainer/backing plate should come off together. I'll still l have the problem of removing that metal ring. I'm fairly sure it's not part of the retainer itself and is supposed to come off. My original question that started this thread and it is still a problem. But I will at least be able to get that whole assembly to a work bench where it should be easier to work on.
We shall see but your thoughts and insights are appreciated. Tomorrow will be a new adventure.

Think it is on with sealant
Reading through the -20 and noticed that when installing this particular part (outer seal and retainer assembly) that it directs "Coat inside of retainer with sealant" so I believe my challenge now is to figure out how to break that old sealant. I've got a parts washer so possibly soak it for a while. We'll see. Any thoughts on dissolving old sealant?
Re: Help getting Retainer Assembly off
The sealant will mostly come off when you knock off the retainer and then you can clean the rest of it off with brake cleaner. I use Permatex #3 sealer for the new sealer. This is where the retainer meets the seal that they are talking about probably. You should always put sealer on the outer rim of a seal to both act as a lubricant for installation and to seal the outer part of the seal to the housing. Since the #3 does not complete harden it also makes removal down the road easier.

Re: Help getting Retainer Assembly off
That shouldn't be all that hard to remove, the retainer is part of the seal, it should come off using a rolling head pry bar if you have one or, by using a large flathead screwdriver.

Thanks Gents. Those last two posts will help quite a bit.
