I have done that on several occasions when money was tight or the flywheel and or ring was not available. I an wary of the new flywheels ever since I got the one that was drilled .005 off center. The only hint was the bolts didn't want to go in real well when mounting the flywheel so I measured it and found the issue. Then for over a year after that I was seeing posts about vibrations after replacements of clutches and it turned out that every one of those had replaced the flywheel and they all had issues putting in the bolts. My guess is that there was a lot of flywheels that was rejected but never made it to the dumpster. Someone said "hey look! they are just throwing out all these brand new flywheels" and they snatched them up and eventually they ended up on the market. That is the stuff I call NOSR, or New Old Stock Rejects! Happens in the classic car world too. There were a bunch of defective quarter panels that circulated around for a while.

I tack welded one on a Jenson Healy in the car one time. It had come loose and warped a bit and was making even more noise than a 440 Mopar starter usually makes and the owner was afraid it was going to come off. Getting the engine out of the car was going to be very expensive so he opted for the tack welds and it worked quite well. I maintained that car for 25 years till he sold it and it never had another issue. Other than that I tacked one on a 350 boat engine of my own just for peace of mind because it went on with very little heat.

It is a sad sound when that reduction starter screams but the fan don't turn... I done several as you say in the car...

Very nice work. I thought the Ford Budd's tag would be on the frame (left/right side by the radiator) for a A1 . ??? A2's were dead center on the firewall.

All Ford tags were center firewall, Kaiser was on the frame rail. AMG on trans tunnel.

Ford built A2's in 70 and 71. Possibly very early 72.

Rick, you're right, I could only find the ring gear/flywheel combo for sale, so replaced the whole thing. I had a fleeting thought about just trying to rotate the existing ring gear 90 degrees on the old flywheel, but figured $80 for the replacement ring gear/flywheel unit was more than worth my time and heartache to avoid pulling the power pack again.
I didn't make any effort to replace the grey goo from the electronic ignition module; I've resigned myself to replacing it at some point if it fails. Anyone had luck trying to replicate that material? I could just envision whatever I used melting right back down over the parts I'd spent an afternoon cleaning!

The goo is more than likely made of PCBs which was good for dielectric compounds back in the day but they are carcinogens. Nasty stuff. Best to replace, keep a spare handy, and have no skin contact with the goo either from a module or coil.

Lots of products that do just that. Just search "electrical potting compound" and you'll have a whole list of products to choose from.

I have a newbie question, for anyone that can answer. In the photo below, at the front of the front differential- there appears to be a yolk (if that's the correct term) on the leading face of the diff. Why is that on the 151s? To me it seems like that would be the mounting point for a PTO. Was that (the PTO) ever an option for the 151?

You could put the differential on the rear wheels.
