transmission overhaul experience anyone?

One of the things I did not like on this one week of driving 8 - 10 hours a day, was the noise of the transmission. Specifically when coasting at higher speeds, this thing easily outperforms the differentials. The jeep has a rebuild transmission with unknown history, the only part I don't know the origin of ( I had got it cheap at War & Piece a few years back).
Now having a few extra transmissions lying around, I want to rebuild one. Who has ever rebuild one and knows what the most likely source of this high noise in coasting would be. Obviously I will measure all parts against the TM, but having a hint where to look most would be helpful.

I would suspect the culprit is in the transfer but not sure.

I don’t like the idea of shimming the rear Diff because it takes 3 shims per bolt to truly isolate it, the shims are a point that will allow slop (and or the diff to get loose), and since the one between the body and the Diff changes the drive shaft angle, they will cause U joint wear!!

I personally find that the upper bearing in the transfer case is the problem, it is splash lubricated, and has the parking brake drum hanging on it. Over the years I have taken to over filling my transmission by about 1", and have had much quieter M151's since. (You do have to start with a good Transmission to do this!!).

Just to illustrate, I watched somebody change a rear diff at a show in New England years ago (he had a several hundred mile drive home) against my advice, I told him the noise was in the Transfer. The noise was the same as before he started. He changed the Transmission at home and the noise was gone (well a lot better!!)

When I did mine many years ago I remember it being a fairly straight forward job. The real fun is getting the cluster gear out. It will come out regardless of how tight it looks. You will think of some new words as you lose skin on your fingers trying to get it out though. I was doing mine because of bad syncronizers and that was when Saturn still had all of the bearings and seals so I just went ahead and did everything. It was quieter when it went back.
