windshield wiper hose routing

Unread post by GerryM » June 3rd, 2015, 10:22 pm

Ok guys i'm working on the wiper on my 151A1
There are two places for tubes that are U shaped on the dash.
There is only 1 line from the vaccume pump coming in. to hook up
where does the other line go from the second U shaped tube go?
A drawing of the routing would be nice if anyone has one handy.

One from the vacuum pump is there. where doe's the second line attach? from the U to where in the engine bay?

In my TM 9-2320-218-34 P from Apr. 1968 shows in Fig 92 on pg 192 that, hose #8 that changes to #7 in the engine compartment goes hooks in the fuel tank vent line and that hose #20 will be # 8 in the engine compartment that hooks to the vacuum pump. The Fig #92 parts are listed on pg 184 and 185.

And if they do not work be aware that those U shaped pieces get full of rust and clog up. I have my return line on there lightly for looks but if I need the wipers I just take the return line off. The 151 was the only vehicle to use a return line.

Rick is correct (no surprise). 100% of the Utubes I have messed with on the East Wind M151s were plugged. Most of the hard lines mounted to the dash as well.

I have had good luck roto rootering them out with a section of wire rope and a cordless drill. Once I get the evil scratched out of them I usually soak them in Phosphoric acid (you could also use evapo-rust) to dissolve and stabilize any remaining rust before rinsing them well, repainting and reinstalling.

While I do have my return line ran, I mostly leave it disconnected since the wipers do run a bit better without the additional drag of the return system.

Fingers crossed... All of ours not only work well but have been pretty reliable as well. No complaints.

Good advise maybe that's why there wasn't any return line hooked up.
