M151 Contract Unit Price

Unread post by Joe » November 28th, 2013, 9:27 am

While looking through some of my old M151 file information, I found this: (US Military Source):

1959 - 1st contract unit price - $2,250.00
1962 - $2,762.00
1964 - $2,367.00
1965 - $2,049.00
1967 - $2,722.00
1971 - $3,277.00
1977 - $7,892.00
1982 - 12,340.00
M151A2 (final version w/ROPS) - $22,128.00

Has anyone else seen these figures before?

As an interesting side note, I have a 1951 M38 Jeep with an original stencil "Price - $2,039.44" painted on the inside of the windshield frame.

Think about it, what changed from 1971 to 1982 on that vehicle? Absolutely nothing! In the first 11 years they went up 500.00, in the second 11 years they went up 9,000.00!!!!!!!! The ROPS kit cost ten grand on top of that! I will censor myself at this point.

Ya'll shouldn't be tossing those $10,000 roll cages! My '71 contract M151A2 was 1/3 the price of those cages.

That must have been one of the grandfathered in first attempts at..."we will charge what the market will bear" bull crap...
"If someone could have stopped that one cold turkey" there wouldn't be anymore of that mess going on today. Think about it, how many times have we seen way over priced stuff being contracted out like that. It's a shame that it happens like that. But until someone say's no more, the dollar signs in these peoples eye's just keep getting bigger and bigger. AND do they pass these huge profits onto the workforce? No not usually, as many of them even still work unpaid overtime hours to complete these contracts, so now they are expected to do it each time. They screwed themselves on that one, and nobody should ever do that, not ever, but it happens anyway.

About 500.00. 1,000.00 tops if you figure in the tooling and price over runs. We were having cages built for race cars for less than that at that same time period. And I guarantee you they were a lot better built.

Keep in mind that in 82 they were being sold on the export market, the US stopped buying them in 78........

Yeah, I seen plenty of race car cages. The ones I have seen are much better built. But then they are built that way to withstand more than a 55 mph roll over too LOL and still, as you said, cost much less too. I know someone currently working on a race car, as we speak, and he still don't have that kind of money in the roll cage. He even has all the stuff to bend it and weld it, and still don't have that kind of money in it.
I think I could buy a good ROPS KIT cheaper than he could make me one, but never spend near that kind of money that was talked about.

Anyone know what we sold them for at export?

as per the list above:

1978 last price to US gov.= $7892.00

1982 non-US export price= $12,340.00

final non-us export price= $22128.00

There were no factory rops equipped M151's in US inventory, rops was an add-on kit in the 80's after production for the US ceased in 1978. AMG attempted to market the A2 to other countries well after the end of US production until dropping the line in favor of their hmmv line. In fact I am not sure if that $22128.00 price was for m151's or hmmv vehicles.
