The Army's New "ATV" / ULV
Well here it is at long last! What do you all think? These are the only 3 photos that were in the yahoo news article. It is made by Polaris.

Re: The Army's New "ATV" / ULV
Looks like it may be easy to roll over?
slowest mutt east of the missippi..
Re: The Army's New "ATV" / ULV
I don't think rollover would be an issue, low and wide which gives an extremely low and stable center of gravity. My thing is with the presentation. It is shown with a mini-gun. Where are you going to keep enough ammo to feed that thing for more than about a minutes worth of firing? Other than that I know that Polaris is making some really nice and capable machines for the civvie market. Just looked at the link, 8 people in that! I think that is wishful thinking. It is bigger than I thought at 2 plus tons. I hope that un-named diesel is a powerhouse.

Just from my first looks at it....It will require brush guards over the front axles. Those boots tear and leak very easily. It has almost the same setup on suspension and axle components as any other 4-wheeler made since 2000. Not a bad design at all, just leaves room to improve upon is all. And as far a weight goes, my 2003 yamaha Grizzly 660 weights in at 700 lbs. and its a 1 seater

looking at those wheels, I'm sure the Middle Eastern Allies in the Coalition of the Willing are going to love them...

Re: The Army's New "ATV" / ULV
I would for sure want one. But by the time these things are getting out of service, I will need a wheel chair and not an ATV

Neat rig. Def a better gun truck than the A2s were.
But unless this thing is covered all over in armor plate, with an ACAV turret on top, (which of course, would make it an usable pig of a machine), someone will write their congressman, complain that they are being sent to war without proper protection, and it will be a repeat of the "hillbilly armor" story/lie that was perpetrated last time. We seem to think that things should be for free, and that wars can be fought without casualties.
I think I have been on that hill. Looks like Ft Irwin.

Re: The Army's New "ATV" / ULV
I like it more after reading the article in the link above. Could make it a whole lot easier to get an element assembled and close to an objective than the good old fashioned boot leather method...
I take exception to not being able to fit a whole squad into an old jeep though...Sometimes we could look like a clown company with everybody piled up in those old rigs!

I don't know either I bet some M151s could do the same things with the right mods.

Local company up here that makes the clutches for Polaris. I'm sure they were involved with this machine...

Re: The Army's New "ATV" / ULV
Pretty cool, a pal of mine has been developing a similar and competing design for the same project for several years. Saw it last year but was asked not to photograph. It was simple, fast, light, had a mod stock high performance diesel and affordable...

Hey, "aint nuthin wrong with a little hillbilly armor".... them modifications work best though, "when installed by us hillbillies"... LOLretiredpara wrote:Neat rig. Def a better gun truck than the A2s were.
